For a 60-second commercial, the new Avengers: Age of Ultron television spot had quite a few standout moments. In between all of the highlights, you may have noticed that Captain America has added some interesting accoutrement to his costume, specifically arm wear that seems to feature two devices used to hold or control his shield.

This is actually a direct callback to the a comic book story found in Avengers #6, the same issue that featured the first appearance of the Masters of Evil.
Even then, Tony Stark was trying to make the other Avengers better, and so he provided Captain America with magnets to attach to his glove to help control his shield.
Stark also attached transistors to Cap’s shield for the same purpose.
Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon is a long time comics fan, so it’s likely not an accident that a similar device is showing up in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon is likely using it as both a call back to the comics and as a way of showing the relationship between Tony Stark and Cap (and the rest of the Avengers) at this point in time, before everything goes to hell in Captain America Civil War.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1.
