Even the skilled and lethal Jack Reacher couldn’t quite muster up enough to take down Madea at the Friday box office, but both films have a long fight ahead of them.

Tyler Perry’s newest entry in the Madea franchise, Boo! A Madea Halloween, managed to come out on top of the Friday numbers, pulling in $9.4 million. Many expected Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back to be sitting at number 1, but as of Friday the film pulled in $8.9 million on 3,780 screens (via Variety).
Those weren’t the only films to open this weekend, as Ouija: Origin of Evil took third place with $5.5 million on 3,167 screens and Keeping Up With The Joneses came in fourth place with $2 million.
Boo! A Madea Halloween only cost $20 million to make, and if the current trajectory keeps up is looking at $25 million for the weekend. The franchise has continued to be successful and has pulled in around $380 million worldwide. As for a Madea Halloween, $25 million is fantastic for a film based on a Chris Rock joke from his hit film Top Five.
The original Jack Reacher was quite successful for Paramount, earning around $218 million on a budget of $60 million. Never Go Back has a similar budget, and tracking puts it’s weekend totals at $23 million. The studio is sure to hope that the film has some legs, but the good news for the film is that the original made most of its money overseas.
The original Ouija was also an unexpected success when it released in 2014, especially when you consider it was only made for $5 million. The sequel is currently tracking for a $13 million dollar weekend, but with Halloween just on the horizon, it might get a renewed surge over the next week or two.
The biggest disappointment is Fox’s Keeping Up With The Joneses, which pairs Zack Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Gal Gadot, and John Hamm up for a super spy comedy. The film didn’t cost that much to make at $40 million but is only tracking at $6 million for the weekend. Hopefully, it can make some of that up overseas.
