Kevin Smith Thinks Batman Movies Should Go Star Wars Route

While sharing his thoughts on Ben Affleck’s reasons for dropping out as the director—as well as who he thinks should replace him—on the the Batman film, Kevin Smith revealed he thinks Warner Bros. should go the Star Wars route with the character.

While the topic began with Fatman on Batman cohost Marc Bernardin suggesting a noir/kung fu mashup with a minimal budget starring the Caped Crusader, Smith took that thought one step further and suggested different annual installments.

“This character can sustain multiple … interpretations,” Smith said.

Fill the space in between with Wonder Woman or Justice League or Flash films, he suggested, but every year they should release a Batman movie either in May or December.

“Get on that schedule,” Smith said, “and throw him around to everybody! … Just make a bunch! Make that [kung fu] one, make a ridiculously expensive one, make one in space… make Justice League Dark. Every year, there needs to be a Batman movie.”

Smith said in the publishing line he’s “not put in a special box.”

Bernardin added that the character has enough villains to sustain that schedule.

“You don’t get to the bottom of that barrel until you’re nine movies in before you’re like, ‘Calendar Man? SURE,’” Bernardin added.

While many fans might roll their eyes at the prospect of yearly Batman films, the character’s box office numbers don’t lie. Who knows if Warner Bros. has even considered the prospect? But if any character can sustain a yearly franchise and jump on the Star Wars trend, it’s the one Smith suggests.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.
