Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a lot of great characters in it but it almost included one more. In fact, at one point, it did.
Now playing in theaters, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 unites the world's favorite band of cosmic misfits to make all of the right mistakes in an effort to save the universe, again. During the second outing, the Guardians and the audience tagging along with them were introduced to several new characters including Mantis, Ego the Living Planet, and Ayesha of the Sovereign.
Originally, they were going to encounter a very important Adam Warlock, as well. It was writer/director James Gunn who elected to remove Warlock from the film's script as he developed the idea further as the addition of another major character would have taken away from those he felt deserved the focus.

"It really is an independent film in the body of a spectacle film," Gunn said during a Facebook live Q&A. "I really don't think there has been another spectacle film that has been so character oriented. The middle of the movie is all about the relationships between the characters and it really isn't about a villain overtaking everything."
While each of the core character played integral parts in Vol. 2, Ayesha was used as more of a plot device who never truly saw an arc with her Sovereign.
"I needed to have some exterior force that was pushing us forward at least a little bit into the adventure and that's what Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, who I loved, that's her purpose," Gunn said. Ayesha's push on the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't stop there, though. By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, she had created one of the most powerful beings from Marvel Comics.
"I also do love the character of Adam Warlock," Gunn said. "In my original draft of the movie, Adam Warlock was a major character. I ended up taking out Adam Warlock because there were simply too many characters. As I said, I need each character to have their own specific story that ws important to the plot and when I added one extra major character like that it was just too many. I naturally am drawn to ensemble films which is what Guardians is. Guardians Vol. 2 more so than Guardians 1. Guardians Vol. 1 is really, truly Peter Quill's movie and the rest of the characters are supporting characters. In this movie, it truly is a multi-protagonist film in that Peter, Rocket, and Gamora are the stars of each of their stories and the other characters sort of revolve around that."
