Batman: Mask of the Phantasm HD Remaster Coming To Blu-ray

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the feature film set in the world of Batman: The Animated Series, is finally getting the high definition treatment.

Warner Bros. yesterday announced that Batman: Mask of the Phantasm will be released on Blu-ray “next month” via Warner Archive. The Blu-ray release of the film will be remastered in 1080p high-definition and the release will include both the original, theatrical 16:9 ratio as well as 4:3.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was released in 1993 and was the first animated Batman movie to appear in theaters. However, while the film received a positive critical reception, the decision to put the movie into theaters came on short notice and the failure to market the film properly ahead of its release contributed to a poor box office performance.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm became a cult hit when it was released on home media. It’s success in that market led to the released of two Batman: The Animated Series direct-to-video movie releases, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero in 1997 and Mystery of the Batwoman in 2003.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm and written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves. The film’s plot borrows elements from Batman: Year Two, a story written by Mike W. Barr featuring art by Alan Davis, Paul Neary, Alfredo Alcala, Mark Farmer and Todd McFarlane that ran in the pages of the Batman comic book in 1987, though the film replaces the comic story’s villain, the Reaper, with the titular Phantasm.

The film features the voices of Batman: The Animated Series voices Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as well as newcomers Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Stacy Keach, and Abe Vigoda.
