Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer and director James Gunn has revealed the film now boasts the biggest opening week on digital download of any Marvel Studios movie.


Exact numbers aren't currently available, but the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel became available to download on Digital HD streaming services on August 8th, two weeks ahead of its home disc release on August 22nd. The digital download is available through Vudu, iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, Microsoft, FandangoNow, and Disney's premiere digital service, Disney Movies Anywhere. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is also the first Disney movie to make its way to the 4K Ultra HD format, which carries even better picture and audio than standard 1080p Blu-rays.

Earlier this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 saw a 53.78% box office increase over the 2014 original, and became the fifth-biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe film of all time domestically, following Captain America: Civil War ($408 million), Iron Man 3 ($409 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($458 million) and The Avengers ($623 million). The film grossed $861.990 million at the worldwide box office, placing it among the biggest hits of the year. James Gunn confirmed in April that he will be officially returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

With the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's digital release, Disney will be sure to release following Marvel Studios productions on the 4K UHD format, and will likely get around to re-releasing past hits on 4K UHD. Expect the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 disc to top the charts as well when it hits store shelves on Tuesday, August 22nd.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn. The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana as Gamora; Dave Bautista as Drax; Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker as Yondu; Karen Gillan as Nebula; and Sean Gunn as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.
