In Cars 3, McQueen will have some new opposition to face, specifically the high-tech Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), but he’ll also have a new ally by his side, the always optimistic Cruze Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo).

Both new characters will play a big part in McQueen’s journey. Director Brian Fee describes Cars 3 as a story of maturity and adapting to new circumstances. “McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1. He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”

You can view several new character spotlight images in the gallery, along with a new still from the film.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Cars 3 is set to debut in theaters on June 16, 2017.
