Marvel Comics Is Finally Bringing Back the Thor Fans Have Been Waiting For

Marvel Comics has been without one of its most powerful and popular characters for far too long. The series Immortal Thor ended with its 25th issue by Al Ewing, Jan Bazaldua, Justin Greenwood, and Pasqual Ferry, when Thor died. Thor’s own brother, Loki, killed him with an arrow-shaped Eternity Mask. When Thor reached Vidblรกinn, his last act was telling the Serpent that neither of them was fully a god or a mortal, so the human soul of Donald Blake belonged to neither being. Thor then sent Blake’s soul back to Earth, where it was reincarnated as the human named Sigurd Jarlson. This led to The Mortal Thor series, which appears almost ready to bring the real Thor back after nearly a year’s absence.

In The Mortal Thor #14 (2026), Sigurd Jarlson went through his most difficult trials, and in the end, he learned about Odin and Loki and what he really was. However, in the end, it looks like Thor is finally ready to return. The fact that this is the legacy issue #800 for Thor comics makes it even more exciting.

The sacrifice that Thor made at the end of the Immortal Thor series left him deader-than-dead. He was finished, and it looked like there was no coming back from this moment. That led to The Mortal Thor series, which was all about Sigurd Jarlson finding himself and coming into his own. That all culminated in The Mortal Thor #14, where Sigurd ended up in the belly of the World Serpent and lived and died countless lives. Along the way, he never once gave up and never gave in to the serpent.

In this issue, Loki (known as Lucky) finally let Kristin Seok know the truth about who he was and who Sigurd Jarlson represented on Earth. Odin the Wanderer was also there to help defeat the serpent when Sigurd proved his worth, and he would never once surrender or give up. When Sigurd demanded to know why he was left in there to die over and over again, Odin said it was so he could fight to save everything. Odin revealed that it was up to Sigurd to bring back Thor.

This was the end of Sigurd’s tale on Earth, and the series will now kick off with him searching for a way to bring Thor back to life. The next issue promises a journey through the Nine Realms, as Sigurd sets off for Niffelheim, Heven, Muspelheim, Jotunheim, and onward in each individual issue. This will likely lead to the return of Thor, but what does that mean for Marvel Comics?

Thor’s death didn’t just kill the God of Thunder and replace him on Earth with a mortal named Sigurd Jarlson. It also destroyed his entire legacy on Earth. Skurge, after Thor’s death, found the courage at the end to sacrifice himself to destroy the Black Bridge to Utgard and the Rainbow Bridge to Midgard to protect Asgard itself. With the Bridges gone, Thor never existed on Earth. Instead, his entire history was replaced by Beta Ray Bill, who has now been the Thor of Earth since the beginning. No one on Earth, except for Bill, even remembered that Thor existed.

Sif herself said that the Asgardians are now only myths to the people of Earth, admitting that they were never there. Now, with Sigurd Jarlson traveling through the Nine Realms to save the world and bring back Thor, what will happen with the God of Thunder’s return? It has been humorous to see the heroes of Earth always making fun of Beta Ray Bill for believing in Thor and the Norse Gods, but the recent “Queen in Black” storyline has proven he is more right than not with Hela showing up and only he knowing who she is. With Hela and Tyr wanting to save Asgard and bring it back, it seems like things are all leading to Thor’s return.

This isn’t the first time Thor has disappeared and come back. After the fallout of a Ragnarok event, Thor and all of Asgard died and remained dead until after the events of “Civil War” ended, and Asgard returned as a location on Earth. However, no one forgot about Thor and Asgard in that event. This time, Thor will either return and everyone’s memories will return along with him, or he will be back, and no one will remember him, at least at first. This all appears to be at least half a year away, if not more, but when the tale of Sigurd Jarlson finally comes to a close, Thor will finally be back in the Marvel Universe.
