The CW has released the first official look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman on Supergirl.

As previously announced, the character of Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent, played by Hoechlin (Road to Perdition, Teen Wolf), will first be seen visiting his cousin Kara in National City at the beginning of the series’ second season. In past episodes, he’s always been depicted as a silhouette or a blur of motion.

The costume features the classic red-and-yellow “S,” a red belt reminiscent of the New 52 version of Superman’s costume, and chunky boots that also hark back to that 2011 redesign. The cape meets his tunic at the shoulders with what looks like a metal clip that feels inspired by either the mid-’90s Reign of the Supermen look for The Eradicator, or Injustice: Gods Among Us.

You can check out our Comic Con International: San Diego interview with Hoechlin, in which he compares his version of Superman to Henry Cavill’s, below.

While it hasn’t been explicitly stated, the obvious reason for Superman’s visit to National City is the crash-landing of a Kryptonian escape pod not unlike the ones he and Supergirl used to get away from the dying world. The pod touched down on the outskirts of National City just hours after a Kryptonian uprising was quelled and Earth’s population was freed of the influence of a Kryptonian mind-control satellite.

While it isn’t known what DC character he will be playing, actor Chris Woods was recently confirmed as the inhabitant of the ship. There has been speculation that he could be the Conner Kent Superboy, Mon-El, or possibly a Kryptonian with ties to Kara’s past.

This version of the iconic costume was designed by Supergirl‘s costume designer Kiersten Ronning.

The second season of Supergirl will premiere Monday, October 10th at 8/7c on The CW.
