It took the box office success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to finally get Warner Bros. to dig deeper into its DC Comics vault, expanding its comic book movie horizons beyond Batman and Superman — though of course the studio couldn’t make that leap without having its two most iconic superheroes fight each other. Nevertheless, Wonder Woman — created three-quarters of a century ago — is at last getting her own live-action film. It’ll be released this June, though you might not be aware of because of the death of marketing. Five months later, Justice League will come out.

DCEU fans will then have to wait over a year to see James Wan’s Aquaman. And like Wonder Woman, the King of the Seven Seas has gone three-quarters of a century without his own live-action film. On the positive side, Jason Momoa is glad that he can put his stamp on the character since there haven’t been any previous big screen interpretations. “We’ve never really seen anything from this guy before, so it’s fun to have a level playing field,” Momoa grumbled optimistically to GQ. “There aren’t like four Aquamans before me. I get to set the tone for it.”
Momoa is intrigued by how Aquaman’s unusual parentage — a human father that is a simple lightkeeper and his mother is the ruler of Atlantis — has caused him to neither fully-embrace the Atlantis nor the surface world. A man stuck between two worlds, yet he still feels the need to protect one as well as the other. “The guy was never really accepted on land, and he was never really accepted in Atlantis,” Momoa explained. “He’s a half-breed. But he’s the best of both worlds. He just doesn’t know how to handle his powers. So it’s kind of a coming of age for a young man to a man, or a man to a king. He’s lost a lot of things and he’s got to cope. He’s an outsider.”

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s (Henry Cavill) selfless act, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller)—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
The cast also features Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, J. K. Simmons as James Gordon, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Amber Heard as Mera, Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf, and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West.
The film is being directed by Zack Snyder, based on a screenplay by Chris Terrio
Justice League will open in theaters on December 21, 2018.
