The world is buzzing strong and steadily about the release of the Wonder Woman movie, which finally arrives in theaters some seventy-five years after the character’s creation.

Wonder Woman maybe the product of a hollywood studio (Warner Bros.), but it’s definitely a film with international appeal, led by Israeli actress/supermodel Gal Gadot, shot and set mostly in Europe, with actors of many backgrounds (Chris Pine, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Houston, Saïd Taghmaoui) filling in supporting roles. With that kind of brand appeal and international reach, one would think Wonder Woman would have a clear path to theaters all over the world; however, the country of Lebanon is banning Wonder Woman from its borders.

Variety reports that the previously reported ban against Wonder Woman being considered in Lebanon has now officially been issued – just two hours before the film was to be shown in theaters there, and after a successful test screening had already been held. The reason? Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is Israeli, a country Lebanon is currently at war with. Ironcially, the same council that decided to ban Wonder Woman failed to get Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice banned in the country. Other Gadot films (like the Fast & Furious installments she starred in and Tom Cruise vehicle Knight & Day) were also shown in the country.

The Lebonese ban comes as part of the country’s ban on Israeli products, as well as mandates banning cross-country interactions. It’s not just Gal Gadot’s generally ethnicity the ban cites, but rather that the star (like most of her fellow citizens) was once an active memeber of the Israeli military, where she served as a fitness trainer, among other things.

As of now, it’s being reported that the Lebanon ban won’t affect Wonder Woman‘s release in other Arab countries.

SYNOPSIS: Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Wonder Woman will be in theaters on June 2. It is 2 hours and 21 minutes long, and Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content.
