In the video above, the writers and animators narrate the process of bringing the popular Elseworld story to animated life.
“If you read the original graphic novel, you’re still gonna be surprised by this movie,” Mike Carlin creative director of animation at DC Entertainment says. “If you think you’ve seen it all as far as Batman is concerned, you haven’t, because you gonna see this and say, ‘Now I have,’ until the next Elseworld we do.”
“It’s not like a really super tight fitting costume like we’re used to seeing Batman in,” executive producer Bruce Timm points out. “Just the idea that you can actually see Batman’s eyes through those big goggles rather than the squinty eyes he normally has kind of gives him a completely different aspect than you’re use to seeing.
Gotham by Gaslight is a DC Comics one-shot by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, with inks by P. Craig Russell. It spawned a sequel, Master of the Future (1991), also written by Augustyn, but with drawings by Eduardo Barreto.
Although not originally labeled as such, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first Elseworlds story, where DC Comics heroes are taken out of their usual setting and put into alternate timelines or realities. Subsequent printings have included the Elseworlds logo.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight arrives in 2018.
