What Comic Inspirations Are In Wonder Woman

You might not believe it, but Wonder Woman is old. Sure, the heroine may not look a day over 30 in most comic runs, but the beloved DC Comics icon is pushing 80. Wonder Woman is celebrating a milestone 75th anniversary these days and making the occasion in a big way.

Later this year, Wonder Woman will make history when her first live-action standalone hits theaters. DC Films partnered with Warner Bros. to make the blockbuster a reality, and producers like Charles Roven helped the project along.

Recently, ComicBook.com had a chance to the producer about his take on the film. Roven had a moment to speak with us about the heroine's complicated history and extensive canon. But, when asked which comic book runs inspired the film, Roven admitted it was hard to pin down a single arc.

"I love the Perez - it's my favorite run, personally," Roven said, referring to George Perez's beloved take on Wonder Woman. "But really, we took things from or used all different versions of the comic throughout history for inspiration."

Continuing, Roven said, "From the stunt team who actually look at the panels to help compose shots to her costume, and our villains, the characters. The source material is the source material. Really, the inspiration for Themyscira, if you go back to the original comics, it was more about just this ideal sort of paradise. At the time Greek inspiration felt very appropriate, but what Patty was trying to do was just say, "All right, what would that be for contemporary time?" When that part of the world isn't quite so mysterious as it once was, what would our version of paradise island be?"
