Over the course of five seasons of The CW’s hit television show, Stephen Amell has portrayed Oliver Queen and his vigilante alter ego the Green Arrow.

Arrow depicts the hero’s quest to protect Star City from numerous foes who have threatened to raze it to to the ground. And while those villainous machinations have remained grandiose and over the top, seemingly impossible to surmount, they’ve always been grounded with a foot in reality.
But in Season 4, Arrow introduced magic to the CW world with Damien Darhk, played by Neal McDonough. The character had numerous magical abilities such as enhanced strength, healing, and telekinesis due to his possession of the Kyushu Idol. But the response to the inclusion on the show was mixed.
Amell addressed the addition of magic to the Arrowverse during a question and answer session at his spotlight panel for Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in London.
“You know, we tried magic on the show [in Season 4],” Amell said. “And we have to try things on the show. We’re going to try things in Season 6 that are going to work. We’re going to try things in Season 6 that aren’t going to work.”

The actor indicated that he’s aware of people’s reactions to the different things the show tries.
“And there were lots of parts about Season 4 that I really love that people didn’t like,” Amell said. “Lots of parts of season- every season that I love that people don’t like, and there are parts that I dislike that people enjoy, which is part of viewing a television show. But I read something online from a reviewer that I really respect, and he said ‘You know, it feels like the most Arrow part of Arrow Season 4 happened on an episode of Legends of Tomorrow when they showed Old Oliver.”‘ And I read it and I went, ‘Sh*t. He might be right.’”
Amell clarified that he didn’t hate those parts of Season 4, but preferred that Arrow would continue telling the narrative that drew fans in to begin with.
“So I just thought that, because I loved having Neal McDonough on the show, I would have him back in a second,” Amell said. “But I thought that, you know, leaning back into some of the stuff that we do on the show that has cultivated over the first three seasons and also the fourth season was the better way to go.”
So while we should expect new things in Season 6, maybe don’t expect the return of H.I.V.E. and Darhk’s mystical abilities.
Arrow Season 6 will return to The CW this fall.
