While his solo film has now lost two directors and is rumored to be seeing a delay, The Flash will play a major role in Justice League, allowing Ezra Miller, who has had two cameos so far in the DC Films Universe, to speed into the role properly. His cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were quick, and didn't get to show anything about the character himself or what to expect as his role expands.
Still, with Justice League under his belt, and more on the way, he's had some time to get to know Barry Allen and explore his way of looking at the universe. For a speedster, that means the Speed Force and how he interacts with it.
"Martha Graham, one of my biggest inspirations, said in a quote, 'There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening.' To me, the idea of a quickening, the idea that the whole universe as we know it is essentially this composition of things moving at different speeds is an interesting idea," Miller said in a recent interview, referencing the famous early 20th Century dancer. "So the Speed Force being the force in the sense that it's a dimensional reality that is manipulating others, almost like a gravitational wave will manipulate others. That is what's interesting for my Barry Allen."
The actor said that his version of Barry Allen will have to deal - speed puns aside - rapidly with his new connection to the Speed Force.
"And for me what becomes interesting is the human being suddenly coming into contact and rapidly starting to merge with this force, and what that is for a human being."
Ezra Miller stars next in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, opening this weekend. He'll return as The Flash in November 2017's Justice League before going on to his own solo film for the superhero. The actor has had to do some damage control about the latter recently, after director Rick Famuyiwa became the second director to leave the project behind. While it's still officially parked on the March 23, 2018 release date, speculation is that it may shift, swapping release dates with Aquaman, another solo film planned to spin out of Justice League.
