Hollywood and fandom responded with sorrow yesterday to the news that beloved character actor Miguel Ferrer, part of a Hollywood dynasty that included his father Jose and his cousin George Clooney, had died after a battle with cancer.
The internet is kind of a magic place, though, and Views From the Longbox podcaster Michael Bailey took to Twitter to share a 1987 photo that serves as a reminder that Ferrer wasn't just an actor who played a lot of comic book characters, he was a fan who lived and breathed this stuff as much as many of our readers do.
You might be cool but you'll never be Miguel Ferrer hanging out with Jerry Siegel, Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Bill Mumy & Mark Hamill cool. RIP pic.twitter.com/2RVrqdNat9

In the tweet above, which as far as we can tell from a quick Google search first appeared online courtesy of Sean Howe of Marvel Comics: The Untold fame in 2013, Ferrer poses with comic book legend Jack Kirby; Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel; Batman co-creator Bob Kane; Lost in Space actor Bill Mumy; and Star Wars star Mark Hamill.
That's a pretty impressive assemblage of geek royalty, all in one place. It's not clear where this was taken, although it's possible (if not likely) the photo comes from the 1987 San Diego Comic Con, a convention to which Hamill, Ferrer, and some of the others were regular guests.
The actor was most recently co-starring as Owen Granger on NCIS: Los Angeles, a show he'd been part of since 2012, though rumors about his health along with a major injury to his character had left his role in question in recent weeks and months. Yesterday, hours before his passing, Ferrer was revealed as the voice of Deathstroke the Terminator in Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, a new animated film coming later this year. Due to the early production of animation, his role was recorded several months ago; now that sadly becomes one of his final projects.
While he had several guest starring appearances and supporting roles in the 1980s, his breakout was as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield in Twin Peaks. He also played the pivotal role of Lloyd Henreid in The Stand mini-series that adapted Stephen King's seminal work, and began voice acting in 1998. As a voice actor, he can be heard in Disney's Mulan, Superman: The Animated Series, Jackie Chan Adventures, The Spectacular Spider-Man, and as the immortal villain Vandal Savage in Young Justice. He starred for six years in Crossing Jordan in the early 2000s, had a guest appearance in Iron Man 3, and is due to appear in the resumed Twin Peaks series. He also appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and the original Robocop film.
