Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2 Trailer Shows Stargirl

Fans today can get their first look at Courtney Whitmore, also known as Stargirl, on the Season Two teaser trailer for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

The character, along with Dr. Mid-Nite and Obsidian, will join the cast in Season Two when the crew of the Waverider — now acting as de facto Time Masters — team up with the Justice Society of America.

Courtney Whitmore, a part of the decades-long Starman legacy, was created in 1999 by Geoff Johns, who based her personality on that of his late sister Courtney, who died in the explosion of TWA Flight 800. Introduced in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and laster carried over to JSA, Courtney’s power comes from the Cosmic Staff (seen in the photo above, being swung), which she inherited from Jack Knight, the third Starman.

Aspects of James Robinson’s 1990s Starman series — the one which featured Knight — have appeared in Arrowverse canon before, mostly on The Flash and in The Flash Season Zero, the show’s comic book companion. Courtney’s origin may be modified in Legends of Tomorrow, since Jack Knight likely would not have been born yet if she’s part of the original, World War II-era JSA.

This isn’t the first time Stargirl has appeared in other media — or even in live action — in spite of her relatively recent creation. The character was a major part of a Geoff Johns-written, Justice Society-centric episode of Smallville in 2010. Britt Irvin, who played Stargirl, appeared a few more times in the show’s final two seasons. While her performance and the look of the character was widely praised, her mask/headpiece was an object of a lot of fan criticism. While the Legends of Tomorrow version has a mask that’s slightly less comics-accurate, it’s less distracting on an actual human being.

Following 2011’s New 52 reboot, Stargirl was one of the only characters traditionally associated with the Justice Society to remain on the main DC earth and be relatively unchanged. She served as the PR “face” of Amanda Waller’s Justice League of America, and later as a member of Justice League United.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW on Thursday, October 13. It airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
