Saturday Night Live isn’t one to shy away from superhero parodies, and its newest one puts a pretty great twist on the world of Batman and Robin.
A sketch called “Captain Shadow and the Cardinal” aired during last night’s Kevin Hart-hosted episode. In it, Captain Shadow (Kevin Hart) and his trusty sidekick Cardinal (Chris Redd) are pulled over by a cop while returning home from a crime-fighting adventure. You can check it out above.

The sketch contains an array of Batman references, from mentioning a villain named “Killer Clown” to the ridiculousness of the “Shadowmobile.” Along the way, it sort of calls out the outrageous nature of Batman and Robin’s partnership, particularly Cardinal only being sixteen years old.
But along the way, the video serves as a pretty clever parody of these DC Comics favorites, and the various evolutions they’ve gone through. Everything from Shadow’s Keaton-like aesthetic, to the Dark Knight-esque opening scene, to the delightfully dark use of “my mother’s ashes” is sure to make Batman fans chuckle. (Although Cardinal’s use of hand motions – and the silly sound effects that come along with them – just might take the cake.)
This is just the latest DC-related sketch to make it into this season of SNL. A “Wayne Thanksgiving” sketch (released the same week as Justice League) saw some of Gotham’s citizens conspiring against Batman, while DCEU star Gal Gadot made waves online by kissing SNL star Kate McKinnon in a Wonder Woman-inspired sketch.
Justice League is now in theaters; Aquaman arrives on December 21, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Wonder Woman 2 on November 1st, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
