Pokemon Go officially has a new strongest Pokemon. Niantic added the Legendary Pokemon Lugia to its popular mobile game yesterday, giving players a new challenge.

In Pokemon canon, Lugia is the “master” of the Legendary Bird trio and the guardian of the seas. While you’d think that an ocean defender would be a Water-Type Pokemon, Lugia actually is a Psychic/Flying type Pokemon.
Lugia can only be encountered as a Raid Boss in a Level 5 Raid, which means that you’ll need to beat it in battle for a chance to catch it. However, Lugia is easily the toughest Raid Boss in the game, so you’ll need to have a good strategy in order to beat this powerful Pokemon.
Raid Battles usually come down to a combination of numbers and a bit of luck, but here are a few tips to help you emerge victorious over Lugia:
Don’t Rely on Rock-Type Pokemon
Earlier this week, a lot of websites were telling players to stock up on Rock-Type Pokemon, which are a great counter to many of the Flying-Type Legendary Pokemon there. However, while Lugiaย will take a lot of damage against Rock-Type attacks, there’s a decent chance that the Lugiaย you’ll encounter will also wipe out all of your Rock-Type Pokemon in one attack.
One of Lugia’sย potential Charge Moves is Hydro Pump, the most powerful Water-Type attack in the game. If your Golemย or Tyranitarย gets hit with one of those attacks, it’s game over for them.
If you’re entering a raid with Lugia, your best bet is to load up your team with Electric and Dark-Type Pokemon. While they don’t have defensive stats like Golem, they won’t get knocked out if you get caught by a Charge Move.ย
Safety in Numbers
Theย Pokemon Goย fanbaseย is still feeling out the Lugia raid, but the general consensus is that it’ll take at least 8 players to take down Lugia. That seems like a lot, but remember that most players will be pretty pumped for a chance to grab one of these powerful Pokemon.
Players have five minutes to defeat a Legendary Pokemon, which means that you’ll need to find aย balance between Pokemon that can do a lot of damage and Pokemon that can survive a Charge Attack or two. While it might be tempting to fill your team with damage sponges like Blisseyย or Snorlax, neither of those Pokemon have the strong attacks to really do much damage against Lugia.ย
Remember that, if your entire team gets wiped out, you can re-enter the raid (within the time limit) with a new set of six Pokemon. So, you might also want to hold a Pokemon or two back from your initial team. However, if you’re going into a Lugiaย raid and don’t have a ton of players joining you, your best bet it to just blitz Lugiaย with whatever you’ve got.ย
