Black Ops 7 Cancels Major Crossover Skins After Fan Feedback

The team behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has confirmed that it has canceled and turned down major crossover opportunities in response to fan feedback. Call of Duty has been one of the biggest multiplayer games for decades now thanks to its easy pick up and play gameplay. It’s fast-paced, low-risk, and easy to grasp. It’s an extremely lucrative title for Activision and has been a cash cow for years. However, the publisher has been forced to make major changes over the years to keep players happy and engaged. For years, Call of Duty made money after launch through map packs, but eventually that begun to split up the player base too much and cause issues.

As a result, Call of Duty started offering skins and smaller microtransactions while making every map completely free. It was a reasonable trade off and made the additional content more optional without impacting how players played the game. However, Call of Duty has gotten a lot of flack for skins in the last few years. As time has gone on, the game has begun to become more Fortnite-ish, bringing in over the top cartoon characters like Beavis and Butthead and even quirky real life figures like Nicki Minaj. Fans began to feel like Call of Duty lost its identity and was becoming way too silly for its own good.

With that said, it seems like fans have been heard loud and clear. CharlieIntel got to go check out Black Ops 7 ahead of the release of the multiplayer beta and was able to interview some of the team at Treyarch. The outlet asked about what’s going on with skins in the upcoming game and the Treyarch had a very noteworthy answer. ย Treyarchโ€™s Senior Director of Production, Yale Miller, confirmed that the studio has scrapped and rejected plans for big crossover skins.

โ€œThere are opportunities that we have had lined up that, after some of our conversations, we straight up turned down. Big, big brands, big things, and weโ€™re like, no. Weโ€™re not gonna do that because it just doesnโ€™t fit,โ€ said Miller.

Shortly after the game’s reveal in August, it was confirmed that Black Ops 7 would be taking fan feedback into account when it came to skins. This prompted Treyarch to cancel plans for carry-over content from Black Ops 6, as that would’ve allowed some of the most controversial skins to make their way into Black Ops 7. Some doubted that this would actually lead to less goofy skins, but according to Treyarch, it has.

That’s not to say there will never be any crossover skins in Black Ops 7 and that everything will be grounded, but it must fit Black Ops and make sense for the world that they’ve created. One non-grounded example that was given is the recent Nuketown-themed skins that let you play as the mannequins that are scattered around the iconic map.

โ€œAll intentions [are] to stick to stuff that we can hand on our heart, say, yeah, that feels Black Ops,โ€ Miller continued. โ€œThatโ€™s really our goal. And I think thatโ€™s a good clarification versus grounded.โ€
