Step aside, Fallout 4 VR, move over DOOM VFR,and get lost Skyrim VR: We’re going back to the basics with some Duck Hunt VR, and we never knew we wanted this so badly until now. Curiously the video you’re about to watch was released back in February, but it’s only now making the rounds thanks to Reddit. Check out these developers’ recreation of Duck Hunt in a VR environment, with a few surprising modern twists.

Before you go asking when you can get your hands on this thing, we regret to inform you that this game will never see the light of day. It’s not really a game at all; more like a tech demo. In the video description we read: “While researching gun mechanics for an upcoming VR game, we became distracted and just made Duck Hunt… but thought we’d update it for 2017. A classic game brought to life in VR. This video is of an internal build, used purely for research purposes. We won’t be releasing it publicly (for equal parts respect of the original and respect for IP lawyers) “
The original Duck Hunt would be fun enough in VR. Looking over the opening moments of the video we were pretty convinced that handling the classic NES zapper in VR was the 2017 twist. This is a game ready-made for VR, and we could have hours of fun racking up a high score just playing the classic.
Then things get real. Busting out dual hand-guns and unloading multiple magazines at an entire flock of ducks (which can also be called a “paddling” of ducks) looks way too fun. And just when you thought things couldn’t get more intense, we look down and see that our arsenal has expanded. Grenades, dudes. A single potato will take down the entire flock. Not as fun as the simulated shooting gallery, but no-less satisfying.
We’ll never see anything like this from Nintendo, but it’s fun to dream.
