The current runes and masteries in League of Legends have been a longstanding source of early game power and champion customization, but with the new Runes Reforged system, players can expect to see even more changes made to the runes than have been seen in the past.

Swapping over to the Runes Reforged system is a massive change on its own, but since League's rune platform is starting from scratch, it leaves room for plenty of ongoing changes to be made. With the new runes approaching their PBE preview as we progress closer to preseason, Riot Meddler, spoke about the new runes and gave an indication of what to expect after their release.

"Now that we're close to getting to show off the new Rune system as a whole figured it would also be good to talk a bit about how it'll change over time," Meddler said. "We expect we'll make more changes to new Runes than we have to old Runes/Masteries in the past."

Expanding on the statement about changing runes more frequently than the current masteries and runes, Meddler said that the decision comes in part from not having to worry about messing with players' rune purchases. Should a player purchase a rune and expect it to have a specific purpose only to have that rune's effect changed, nerfed, or buffed later on, it could lead to some pretty disappointing purchases. With the new runes being free, there's more freedom there to alter power and effects as Riot sees fit.

Post-launch, the new Runes Reforged system may receive additional runes after players have had a chance to get used to the revolutionary system. Changes and balance tweaks for the runes will come as players settle into their power and identify overbearing strengths or glaring weaknesses, those changes likely coming sooner rather than later.

Later on down the line, more runes may be added in addition to a new rune tree. For now, the runes are expected to be seen on the PBE in the near future before they go live for all players.
