As you might expect, Sonic the Hedgehog has had his share of racing games over the years, but unfortunately, they haven't enjoyed the same recognition or success as the Mario Kart games. That isn't necessarily fair, as games like Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and its sequel are actually really good, but there's just no competing with Nintendo's glory hog plumber. Mario's the kind of guy who has to beat you at your own game, y'know? So, maybe it's time for Sonic to just throw in the towel and join the Mario Kart circuit?

Well, it's not official, but Sonic is now part of the Mario Kart 8 for Wii U roster thanks to modder and YouTuber CorBond57. You can check out the Mario Kart/Sonic crossover in the video above. The blue hedgehog looks right at home in the game, and yes, he wins the race, because of course he does. The day Sonic can't outrace Toad is the day he needs to hand up the red sneakers.

At the moment, Sonic is just an alternate skin for Metal Mario, so he doesn't have his own voice and sound effects yet, but CorBond is promising this is a work in progress and will be improved. Personally, I'd like a version of Sonic that doesn't use a car, but I suppose that might be tough to pull off.

So, could we ever see Sonic make an official appearance in a Mario Kart game? I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. Mario Kart 8 recently opened the series up to Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon characters, and Sonic and Mario have met before for some friendly Super Smash Bros. and Olympic competition.

The revamped Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently hit the Nintendo Switch. You can check out our full review, right here.
