Tired of Hecate Turning You Into a Sheep in Hades 2? This Trick Can Help

Now that Hades 2 is officially out in the world, new and returning players alike are diving into the 1.0 release. Whether you played it in Early Access or not, the joy of learning the perfect strategy to combat the game’s toughest bosses remains one of the core joys of the game. Hecate might be the first Guardian boss you encounter, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a few tricks up her sleeve. In particular, turning you into a helpless, slow little sheep is probably her most irritating move. It might initially seem like there’s no way around it, but I’ve found one method to retain those quick dodges and avoid sheephood in Hecate’s boss battle.

In Hades 2, Hecate is Melinoe’s mentor and parental figure. So, it might be a bit of a surprise the first time you make your way through Erebus to find her waiting behind that Guardian door. Hecate’s purpose is to test your strength, making sure you’re ready for what lies ahead. Most of her tricks are pretty easy to dodge once you get the hang of this boss battle. Turning you into a helpless sheep (or, much later in the game, sometimes a pig) can be a bit more of a challenge. Your sheep self can’t dodge moves as well, let alone attack Hecate’s minions. Thankfully, there is one way Melinoe can avoid this spell, and it has to do with the adorable frog, Frinos.

In Hades 2, Melinoe can befriend certain animal familiars and bring them into battle with her. The first one you will encounter is, of course, her sweet frog friend Frinos. He tends to hang out near where you respawn at the end of a run. This unassuming frog also happens to be the secret to avoiding Hecate’s transformation spell. Each familiar has their own special abilities in battle and in resource collection. And Frinos? He’ll happily take the bullet (or spell) for you. The other familiars, which you’ll encounter as you progress, are helpful in many ways, but they won’t block the sheep/pig transformation spell.

To gain the ability to bring Frinos with you on your nightly ventures, you’ll need to unlock and cast a specific incantation. The spell in question is called Faith of Familiar Spirits, and Hecate herself will teach it to you. Unfortunately, you’ll have to defeat her a few times, sheep spell and all, before she’ll grant you this wisdom. But once she does, you’ll be able to safely bring Frinos along to future encounters.

The Faith of Familiar Spirits incantation requires the following ingredients:

  • 2 Nectar
  • 1 Lotus Flower

Nectar is available as a reward for completing certain encounters and can also be purchased from the Wretched Broker. Charon will also sometimes carry it among his wares. Lotus Flower can be harvested in Oceanus as a random spawn.

Once you complete the incantation, take the treats to Frinos and select the “Bond” interaction to feed him one. Then, you will find Frinos waiting for you in the last room before you enter the Underworld. Select him as your Familiar for the night, and he’ll protect you from some attacks – including Hecate’s sheep spell.

How to Get Frinos to Block Hecate’s Sheep Spell

Just having Frinos with you will, unfortunately, not be enough to prevent the sheep spell from hitting you. You will still need to have fast reflexes and a bit of luck. She casts this transformation spell the second time she puts up her impervious barrier. So, when this happens, try to ensure that Frinos is nearby. Then, as the spell chases you, sprint behind Frinos.

If you can put him between you and the spell, he should absorb its effect. Both you and your adorable frog friend will be unharmed, and you can carry on with dispatching Hecate’s minions so she will be vulnerable to your attacks once again. While not foolproof, this can definitely help make those boss battles with Hecate a bit less frustrating as you make your way further into the depths towards Tartarus.
