Craving more high-speed roller-coaster racing thrills? Later this month, Trackmania2 on PC (styled as "Trackmania squared") is getting a face-lift and tons of additional content with the Lagoon update. On May 23, Lagoon will add a brand new 65-track solo campaign, and new player creation tools to the Maniaplanet platform. Actually, while we still have a bit of a wait for the new tracks to hit, the Maniaplanet update is going live imminently.

For track creators, the Maniaplanet update will most notably add a brand new mesh modeler enabling them to design and create new 3D objects. From the official update:

"The Maniaplanet 4 update adds a number of under-the-hood improvements to boost game performance, as well as free access to a new channel system for discovering user-generated content and connecting with other players. Players will also notice key differences in their games; in addition to new textures and features, the Chase team mode is now available in all Trackmania2 titles, while Shootmania Storm players get new weapons, vehicles, and a new Warlords game mode."

The Trackmania series is one of the few original arcade racers out there. The Trackmania experience remains unique, as players blast through wildly twist, vomit-inducing tracks and high speeds attempting not to come in first place necessarily, but rather to get the best lap time possible. This is the first significant Trackmania content launch since the release of Trackmania Turbo on consoles and PC, which was received well by fans and critics alike.

If you hear "arcade racer" and you're looking for something that's easy to pick up and a joy to play through as more of a casual, this probably isn't the game for you. Though it's not a sim racer, it does handle very strictly, and a lot of the cars require some serious finesse to maneuver effectively. There's also a huge competitive slant to Trackmania games, and if you don't enjoy shaving off milliseconds and running single laps four, five, nine, or twenty times to go for the fastest time, this might not be the game for you. That being said, we had a blast with Trackmania Turbo.

"Trackmania2 Lagoon boasts high-speed runs through rollercoaster-like tracks on the tropical island of Lagoon, and you'll be able to challenge other players in Time Attack, Round, Team, Cup, Laps, and Chase events. Trackmania2 Lagoon will be available on Steam, Uplay, and Maniaplanet on May 23."
