Longtime fans of the X-Men know that Storm had a rather distinct look during the 1980s. It turns out Storm’s costume in X-Men: Apocalypse was nearly identical to that same 1980s look.

Storm was reintroduced in the X-Men movies franchise in X-Men: Apocalypse, with Alexandra Shipp playing a younger version of the character than had appeared previously. Storm was transformed into a Horseman of Apocalypse, and so spent most of the film wearing an appropriately over-the-top Horseman costume.
Costume illustrator Greg Hopwood has revealed a new piece of concept art showing a much more stripped down and 1980s accurate Storm costume. The costume itself was designed by Louise Mingenbach. The concept art can be seen above. Check out the art below to compare it to comic book source material.
Over the Labor Day weekend, Hopwood also revealed some other unused X-Men: Apocalypse character designs, including Mingenbach’s early design for Jean Grey’s X-Men costume. Jean Grey’s design is clearly inspired by Jean Grey’s 1990’s costume. The final version of the costume was seen in the closing scene of X-Men: Apocalypse.
Mingenbach’s Storm design is incredibly close to the source material. Storm’s hair in the design isn’t quite a mohawk but serves just as well to convey the rebellious and independent spirit that defined Storm during that era, and the sleeveless leather jacket and leather pants are spot-on.
X-Men: Apocalypse reintroduced several iconic X-Men characters back into the X-Men movies franchise as younger versions of themselves. Shipp’s Storm was one of them, as was Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. The film saw the young X-Men forced into battle with the mutant demigod Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac.
X-Men: Apocalypse releases as a digital download on Sept. 9, and comes to DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on Oct. 1.
