Marvel Comics fans have known for a while – at least since the Spider-Man/Deadpool ongoing series began – that Spider-Man and Deadpool make a great pair. Over the course of the series, they’ve also learned that Deadpool genuinely admires Spider-Man, and looks at Spider-Man as a kind of role model now that he’s chosen to walk a more heroic path as a member fo the Avengers Unity Squad.

But what nobody knew until now is that Spider-Man is Deadpool’s “heartmate,” and that is Marvel Comics canon.
The revelation came in Spider-Man/Deadpool #1.MU, a one-shot issue from the creative team of writer Joshua Corin and Tigh Walker. The issue ties into the events of the Monsters Unleashed event.
The issue begins at a Canadian all-girl boarding school where the students are also members of a witch coven. The girls kidnapped Deadpool as part of their plot to summon the spirit of their dead mistress, a powerful witch, back to life.
To accomplish their goal, the girls need a body for their mistress to possess, but they don’t want Deadpool’s. Instead, they want Shiklah, the immortal succubus who married Deadpool. The girls perform a ritual spell meant to summon the subject’s “heartmate,” assuming that Deadpool’s wife will be the one to show up.
The girls assume wrong. Instead, it’s Spider-Man who shows up at the school, having been pulled away from fighting a giant monster alongside the Avengers. That Spider-Man is the one summoned by the spell confirms that Spider-Man is, canonically, Deadpool’s heartmate.
The rest of the story involves Spider-Man becoming possessed by the witch spirit while he and Deadpool attempt to fight a giant monster that lands in Canada. Things get sorted and Spider-Man heads back into the fight of Monsters Unleashed.
The big takeaway here though is that Spider-Man is definitively Deadpool’s heartmate. That may seem like a minor thing, but fans should remember that Spider-Man is about to be part of a major crossover in which Shiklah goes to war with the surface world.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #1.MU is on sale now in comic shops and digital comics apps.
