One of the most pleasant surprises of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 4 has been the growing romance between Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). There are fans who have long believed that these two longtime friends and co-workers at SHIELD belonged together, but the circumstances of Agents of SHIELD‘s fourth season seemed to be the first time that the relationship was primed to turn romantic.

But then things got complicated. Coulson and May grew closer, but then May was kidnapped, drugged, uploaded into the virtual reality of the Framework, and replaced with a Life Model Decoy. To make matters worth, the romantic connection finally matured between Coulson and May while the LMD was still impersonating May.

Coulson and May both finally escaped the Framework in last week’s episode, “The Return,” but Coulson has been shy about filling May in on the details of what transpired while she was gone. Is there still hope for their relationship?

“They certainly have to address it,” Agents of SHIELD executive producer Jeff Bell tells ComicBook.com. “I think they’ve always been honest with one another and so I guess that will happen and then how they go forward, I think, is something that we watch and wait.”

“May and Coulson have a unique relationship in that they have a sort of three layers to their relationship,” executive producer Jed Whedon adds. “They have a professional relationship which has always been rock solid and out of that stemmed the friendship but its pretty rock solid. If I was to take it a little further, I think they are still going to fall back on those two foundations, but we will have to see how May reacts to realizing that, when she wasn’t around, her robot self might have leaked out a little of her inside feelings.”

“How embarrassing. I hate it when that happens,” joked Bell.

In “World’s End,” with the surprising emergence of Ghost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’s fourth season finale, “World’s End,” airs Tuesday, May 16 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they’ve ever faced โ€“ an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
