Guardians of the Galaxy actor Zoe Saldana might be joining Peyton Reed in the Marvel Studios timeout corner if the latest slip turns out to be true. The MCU’s Gamora was recently asked about her involvement on current productions of the Avengers movies and possibly revealed the top-secret title of the movie formerly known as Avengers: Infinity War Part II.

The BBC’s Lizo Mzimbia spoke with Saldana at a press event for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when she slipped the juicy detail.
“We’re in the middle of it,” Saldana said. “I think that the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to Infinity War‘s, like, the first part. And we all have to go back for Gauntlet later this year.”
Gauntlet. As in Infinity Gauntlet.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said that he didn’t want to reveal the name of the fourth Avengers film for spoiler reasons, and if the film does end up being called Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet that could reveal a lot about the trajectory of both films.

Then again, Gauntlet could simply be the working title but that seems unlikely given Marvel Studios’ penchant for code names on the set.

If the next film is called Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet, that could mean the first film consists of Thanos‘ attempt to gather all of the Infinity Stones together, with an ending comparable to Empire Strikes Back in that the bad guys win. It would explain the production being tackled as two films, allowing one to end as a cliffhanger with only a small amount of downtime between the movies.
But the titles suggest a huge change to the Marvel Comics source material being adapted to film, as Infinity War is actually the sequel to Infinity Gauntlet and not the other way around.
Let’s take look and see what this could possibly mean for the future of Marvel Studios as we examine the Infinity Gauntlet story from the comics.
Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet
The original Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, George Pérez, and Ron Lim focused on Thanos campaign to quite literally destroy the Marvel Universe. The story begins with the Mad Titan having previously assembled the Infinity Gems.
Thanos kills off half of the sentient life in the universe in an effort to impress death, then goes on to destroy cosmic entities like Galactus, the Celestials, and Eternity itself.
The heroes are then gathered by Adam Warlock (whose sister Ayesha is debuting in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), who leads the heroes on a last ditch effort to save the universe. But it is Thanos’ own daughter Nebula who ends up reversing most of the damage before Warlock gets ahold of the Gauntlet to finally defeat Thanos.
While it’s already pretty obvious based on set photos that Avengers: Infinity War will not adapt the comic of its namesake, these developments hint that the movie will be adapting both Thanos Quest and Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers event Infinity, in which the Mad Titan leads the Black Order against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel could outright ignore the news and hope it gets swept away or come out and confirm Saldana’s slip. One course would allow rumor and speculation to swirl, probably causing a lot of misinformation to mount. The other would give away a major plot point about the films.

Avengers: Infinity War is described by Marvel Studios as the culmination of everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man in 2008. The movie is filming now under directors Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The expansive confirmed cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 release, respectively.
