In Avengers: Infinity War stopping Thanos from inflicting his twisted will on reality is an all-hands on deck event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe bringing together the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in the upcoming film. With the threat of Thanos being so extreme many fans have wondered who else might pop up to help save the world.

Fan-favorite SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson is one character that seems a likely choice, but according to actor Clark Gregg the idea of Coulson returning for Avengers: Infinity War is something that he's been kept in the dark about. Gregg told ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis in an exclusive interview at New York Comic Con that he would likely be the last to know.

"I guess there's always the chance, but I would be the last one they would tell about that," he said.

Gregg's Coulson was a major force in the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Phase 1. The character first appeared in Iron Man where he attempted to debrief Tony Stark after he escaped captivity in Afghanistan, then supervises Stark for a time in Iron Man 2 before being reassigned to a crisis in New Mexico. That crisis leads him into Thor where Coulson was able to form an alliance between SHIELD and the God of Thunder. The character's final appearance in The Avengers is ultimately what forms the team when Coulson is shot and fatally wounded by Loki, an event that Nick Fury uses to motivate the team.

With Coulson clearly not actually dead thanks to being resurrected after the events of The Avengers many fans have long-hoped that the beloved character would make a return to the team he inspired and while it doesn't sound likely. Though with Marvel keeping details of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel so tightly under wraps, Gregg said that the way he would find out would be an operation worthy of SHIELD itself.

"It would be a midnight, actual guys in black suits showing up at my house to get me."
