Chadwick Boseman Teases We Might See Other Black Panthers

Earlier this year, Chadwick Boseman suited up as the Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. The hero's debut positioned Black Panther as something of an anti-superhero as the character went toe-to-claw with Captain America. However, the Black Panther solo flick promises to shed more light on the mysterious hero's backstory - and Chadwick is teasing that means we might see other Black Panthers.

The actor recently sat down with Yahoo! Movies and he talked about his blockbuster role. Speaking about the future Black Panther film, Chadwick said, "There is definitely more of his origin in Black Panther."

"You're going to learn about Wakanda, its culture, its traditions, the past," he went on. "You can go through all the comic books and know that there's more Panthers that have existed in the past - that's origin."

Of course, the origin of the Black Panther is a ceremonial one. The title is a legacy passed down by each chief of the Panther Tribe in Wakanda - well, if the new leader is deemed worthy, of course

In the comics, T'Challa stands as the most famous iteration of Black Panther. Before him, others held the position like T'Chaka and S'yan. Judging by Chadwick's teaser, it seems like Black Panther might be flashing back to revisit the history of the Black Panther title.

So, if you had thought Civil War fleshed out the origin story of Black Panther, then think again. Chadwick stresses the film was just a "jumping off point" for the character.

"It's not necessarily an origin story because he remains a mystery through most of the movie," the actor explained. "When I take the mask off and it's revealed that it's the Prince of Wakanda, that's the guy who's father was just killed – it's a surprise. So then, you're learning - as you watch the movie - what his powers are, because you're not sure. He remains a mystery through most of the movie."

As for how Civil War set up the iconic hero, Chadwick told ComicBook.com's Jim Viscardi that the film intentionally made the Black Panther's arc air-tight.

"You don't want to give away certain things that you want to make sure happen, so you don't want to do to much of this, to much of that, you want to make sure you concentrate," the actor said.

"I think that's why they made his arc so complete, so that it is contained. You have to, in doing that, make sure you leave room for a lot of things that you want to happen. I can't say what they are but that was thought out by me, thought out by the producers, the directors, I'm sure Stan Lee had something to say about it, Ryan Coogler had something to say about it."

The film is being directed and co-written by Creed and Fruitvale Station filmmaker, Ryan Coogler. The cast features Chadwick Boseman (42) as Black Panther/T'Challa, Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) as Okoye, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) as Erik Killmonger, and Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Nakia.

will slash into theaters on February 16, 2018.
