Spoilers incoming for Doctor Strange #20, so if you haven’t read the issue yet you’ve been warned.

Doctor Strange’s foremost aid Wong has been through a lot recently, including being possessed by Mister Misery. While Wong is still recovering, Strange has had to rely more on Zelma, and thanks to events in this week’s issue he will have to rely on Zelma even more going forward, as she’s also his new apprentice.

Strange takes Zelma with him on a recovery run for an ancient wand, one that still has plenty of magical properties left. Unfortunately, they end up in an alternate dimension on the way back. Doctor Strange ends up poisoned, but Zelma is able to get them to a cave nearby as she waits for him to recover.

Unfortunately, that never happens, and Morgan le Fay’s armies are starting to close in. She takes the last spellbook and their new wand and performs a spell of transference, taking Strange’s poison into her body. Now recovered he is able to get them back home, but her body won’t last much longer in this state.

The only way she’ll survive is to become like Strange, but Wong argues against it. Without a choice, he gives her a creature to eat that opens her magical senses. After she recovers, Strange walks with her through town, getting her to open up her third eye, where she now sees all of the magical creatures as Strange sees them.

By issue’s end, she tells a new customer that “the Doctor will see you know…and so will his apprentice.” She’ll certainly have her hands full, as Wong has left the Sanctum Sanctorum, disagreeing with the decision that Strange ultimately made.

It looks like a new era is ready to begin.
