For a Marvel Studios movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had an abundance of villains. Star-Lord’s daddy issues brought the Ravagers and Ego the Living into conflict with the Guardians, so why bring the Ayesha and the Sovereign into the mix as well?

During a live question and answer session on Facebook, director James Gunn provided a simple answer, and that was that his action movie needed more action.

“It was just about the story,” Gunn said. “We needed to have a pushing force, was is the Sovereign, because really the thing about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is its really and independent film in the body of a spectacle film.

“Creating this film that was so character-orientedโ€ฆI needed to focus on that, so I needed to have some exterior force that was pushing us forward at least a little bit into the adventure, and that is what Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, who I love, that’s her purpose.”

Gunn goes on to say that he also loves the character Adam Warlock, who is Ayesha’s genetic twin in the Marvel Comics universe, as payoff sure to come when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes out.
