Marvel Games has a new mission statement: “create truly epic games.” Insomniac’s freshly announced Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 4 may be the first out of the gate, but there’s plenty more in the works. Could one of them possibly be a new installment of the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting game franchise?

“There’s nothing we can say at this time,” Marvel Games vice president Jay Ong told Polygon. “Let’s just say that we hear that a lot. We love our fans and we certainly want to please them. Beyond that we can’t say anything at this time. But who knows what the future holds?”

Capcom’s first Marvel fighting game was 1994’s X-Men: Children of the Atom, followed by Marvel Super Heroes in 1995. In 1996, Capcom released the first crossover between the two companies, X-Men vs. Street Fighter. The franchise grew from there into Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and then Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. The latest installment of the series, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, was released in 2011.

In 2013, Capcom lost several of its Marvel character licenses and was forced to pull several Marvel games from digital storefronts. Despite its age, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the updated edition of Fate of Two Worlds, remains popular in the fighting game community and will be featured at this year’s Evolution Championship Series, the premiere competitive esports event for fighting games in the United States.
