With an estimated domestic gross of $1.5 million this weekend, Inhumans brought in a significantly smaller amount than Marvel’s usual big-screen offerings. But with Inhumans being a television series and not a traditional feature film it was unlikely that the show would compare to the opening weekend gross of Spider-Man: Homecoming or even Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Instead, to see how successful first television show filmed in IMAX compares to similar projects, such as Game of Thrones‘ two-episode IMAX screenings in 2015 or 2016’s animated film Batman: The Killing Joke let’s take a look at the per screen receipts.
Read on to see how Inhumans compares.
‘Inhumans’
Inhumans‘ $1.5 million box office haul this weekend came from the IMAX exclusive debut playing on 393 screens in the U. S. According to Box Office Mojo, that breaks down to $3,817 per screen for the past three days. With it being a holiday weekend, Inhumans’ total gross will likely get a little bit of a boost.
However, Inhumans has received mixed-to-poor ratings from critics and Marvel fans alike and there has already been some question as to how long the debut will stay on IMAX screens making this opening weekend even more important for the project.
‘Game of Thrones’ (2015)
In 2015 HBO’s Game of Thrones had the honor of being the first-ever TV series to run on IMAX screens. The special presentation saw the screening of the final two episodes of season four along with an exclusive preview trailer for the fifth season of the series. The episodes weren’t filmed in IMAX like Inhumans was, but were instead digitally re-mastered for the large screen format.
In it’s opening weekend run, Game of Thrones grossed $1.4 million, just under Inhumans‘ $1.5 million. But the HBO hit was shown on only 205 theaters, nearly half what Inhumans is showing on. Fewer screens showing Game of Thrones resulted in a $7,146 per screen take, just under double Inhumans‘ per screen gross.
Game of Thrones ultimately ran on IMAX for a full week and brought in a total gross of just under $1.9 million.
‘Batman: The Killing Joke’ (2016)
While not a television show like Inhumans or Game of Thrones, Batman: The Killing Joke was also unique in its theatrical run. While initially announced as a direct-to-video project, following its premiere at 2016’s San Diego Comic Con the film was simultaneously released digitally and in theaters in what was supposed to be a one night only event on July 26, 2016. The film ended up with two additional theatrical screenings due to high demand.
Over 1325 total screens the film’s run averaged $2,849 per screen. While that’s less per screen than Inhumans’ over the same time frame Batman: The Killing Joke beats both Inhumans and Game of Thrones in total domestic gross, bringing in $3.8 million.
Inhumans is now playing on IMAX screens and will premiere on ABC for an eight-episode run on September 29th.
