The exclusive art shows off new looks (from left to right) at Gert (Ariela Barer), Molly (Allegra Acosta), Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Nico (Lyrica Okano), Chase (Gregg Sulkin) and Karolina (Virginia Gardner) who — in an extreme case of teenage rebellion — must band together to take on their supervillain parents.
Many of the six actually have their own powers, which are teased in the exclusive art below. Nico (Lyrica Okano) has control of the magical Staff of One, Molly's (Allegra Acosta) glowing eyes are a nod to her super strength, Chase (Gregg Sulkin) is wearing the famed Fistigons, Karolina's (Virginia Gardner) glowing bracelet is actually tempering her power, while Gert's (Ariela Barer) power involves telepathically controlling her genetically engineered velociraptor Old Lace, whose tail makes a cameo. And Alex (Rhenzy Feliz)? Well, the child prodigy is the brains of the group — though comic book fans may suspect more, but that's a story for another time.
Showrunners and executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz spoke with ComicBook.com at New York Comic Con where they revealed the show would differ from the comics, but would nonetheless stay true to co-creator Brian K. Vaughan's vision.
"We love the book, so obviously we wouldn't have wanted to do this if we were like, 'well let's just chuck the comic book, we don't need it.' We love the book," Schwartz said. "So naturally, being reverent to it was going to be a part of that but we were very fortunate that we had Brian K. Vaughan in the room with us for the first month in the writer's room of the show.
"And as we talked about the things we were going to do to update the story, or dig into the story, or slow down the story, to have him there not only endorsing those ideas or embracing ideas but pitching ideas just made us all feel much more confident and excited about how it was going to live as a TV show."
Runaways may be the best Marvel series yet as noted in ComicBook.com's review, which praises the teen superhero drama as having "humor and heart, blending teen angst and dramatics with compelling character conflicts, all heightened with some super powers and a conspiracy driving the action."
