There’s never been more competition between the two big comic companies, though it is much more diverse than it used to be. Now both DC and Marvel have their own cinematic universes in play, and two fan favorites are making their way to the big screen in next month’s Wonder Woman and 2018’s Captain Marvel, starring Gal Gadot and Brie Larson respectively.

So it stands to reason, who would win if the two powerhouses met in combat? They’re both insanely powerful, but they also have outside training to rely on when powers aren’t enough. There are a wealth of differences though in how they approach a fight, and what is exactly at their disposal when one starts. So why not take a look at each competitor and figure out what they’re bringing to the table? Sounds fun right, and once all the information is compiled it will be time to figure out just who would come out on top in a fight.
Now, if these two fought 10 times, odds are they would end up splitting the total, so this isn’t to say one can’t beat the other ever. This is just a one and done prediction of who has the best chance in a single fight. Also, there have been plenty of renditions of both characters along their long histories, but for this situation, the core aspects and powers of each are being considered and nothing else. Sorry, Binary doesn’t count, and neither does that time Wonder Woman grabbed Thor’s hammer (long story). Also no fair calling in support from friends and allies. That means Wonder Woman can’t call in Superman and Captain Marvel can’t call in Captain America, though to be fair, she probably doesn’t really want to do that right now anyway.
Alright, so now that the definition junk is out of the way, hit the next slide to see what powerset and abilities each hero brings to his superhero contest!
The Powers
Wonder Woman was gifted her powers by the Greek Gods themselves, including her superior strength.ย She’s stronger than Superman and has fought Captain Marvel to a stalemate if that tells you anything. In addition to the strength of Demeter, she also retains the speed of Hermes and can travel at hypersonic speeds. She has aย high tolerance inย extremeย conditionsย and explosions and fire don’t often harm her. Diana can also take to the skies at high speeds, and possesses a healing factor that quickly patches her wounds. Not only that, but she is gifted with the power of wisdom by Athena, aidingย her in situations that call for careful planning and accurate execution.ย
As for Captain Marvel, Danversย has strength levels that allow her to lift and throw objects ranging from 75 to 92 tons. She also has the ability to fly, where she can easily hit Mach-3 speeds. That speed also helps in the agility department, allowing her to dodge speeding bullets, though she doesn’t really have to given that she’s bulletproof. Not only that, but she is able to absorb almost any type of energy, including explosive energy, which then bolsters all of her attacks. That includes her already potent photon blasts, which have shattered Iron Man’s armor completely in past bouts. Her body also has the ability to regenerate quickly from injuries.

The Combat Training
It pays to be born among an army of Amazon warriors, and Diana started soaking up the experienceย from a young age. She was taught how to handle herself in any scenario, from up close fisticuffs to ranged marksmanshipย with a bow or a spear not to mention her trademark sword and shield. The gifts of the Amazons don’t stop there either, as her braceletsย allow her to deflect bullets, arrows, and dissipate damage from any other sources. Her tiara can be thrown at breakneck speeds, knocking out most who have the misfortune of getting pegged with it, and her golden lasso is unbreakable and will conjure the truth out of anyone in its grasp.
Captain Marvel draws upon an extensiveย military background, both earthbound and alien. Carol is half-Kree, and the race has always prided themselves on their combat prowess. Carol was also a member of the CIA, where she learned the art of espionage and close quarters combat. Not content to just being deadly on the ground, Carol used her time in the Air Force to become a skilled fighter pilot, something that comes in handy when you can fly at superhuman speeds. Carol also happens to be one of the most resourceful heroes in the Marvel Universe, scrapping together a solution out of chewing gum and a pitchfork if the need calls for it, and it’s part of the reasonย why you always want her on your side.

The Weaknesses
Diana can withstand a great deal, but she does have a weakness to piercing weapons. That’s why she has to deflect bullets and arrows, as they can penetrate her skin. Granted, she will heal relatively quickly from the injury, but enough of them can do some significantย damage. Her lasso can also be turned against her in certain instances, as the lasso’s impenetrable strengthย does work both ways. Good luck actually trying to accomplishย that feat, but it has been done before.ย
Captain Marvel doesn’t actuallyย have any built-in weaknesses, though the character has struggled at times to keep control of her impressive powers. She still doesn’t really know the limits of her powers, and on more than one occasion she’s burned herself out after tapping into a new tier. If Captain Marvel has a weakness, it’s that she can be a bit reckless at times. She’s been known to just hop into a fight without really understanding the reason behind it. While she’ll recover and sort things out eventually, sometimes taking a step back is what’s needed more than rushing in blind.

The Final Battle
The two heroines stand tall facing each other, sizing the other up. Carol’s busy talking herself into fighting Diana, but Diana has no such hesitancy. She charges forwardย with her shield aimed toward Captain Marvel’s head and her sword slashing at Marvel’sย ankle. The sword slash does nothing, but the shield makes impact hard, knocking Marvel up and back. Wonder Woman doesn’t let her breathe either, catching her feet with her lasso and swingย her into a nearby building.
Carol’s got the message and is now a bit ticked. A photo blast charges its way toward Wonderย Woman, who disperses the blast with her bracelets. Carol’s a bit stunned, but she changes course, blasting the ground beneath Wonder Woman to throw her off balance. Diana’s focus shifts for just a minute, giving Captain Marvel enough time to speed forward and hit Wonder Woman square in the jaw. She definitely feels it, but now it’s a fight, as the sly smile on her face would suggest.
The two dodge and trade blows for a while after, and throughout the exchange, Wonder Woman is able to deflect some of Captain Marvel’sย photon blasts back at her. Initially, she did it to damage her but discovered that she just absorbed them like a superhuman battery. It then occurred to her that if she could power up her foe enough, she might have a hard time dealing with all that extra energy. Both heroes duke it out for a long while, with Captain Marvel hitting harder as her energy levels go up. The battering is starting to take its toll, though Wonder Woman does getย a few more shots in. She startsย noticing that Marvel is having a harder time controllingย the excess energy and quicklyย capitalizes. A few more hits and Captain Marvelย loses control completely, unleashing a pure energy wave that knocks Diana and Carol back. It damaged both heroes, but Diana was waiting for it and braced with her bracelets and shield. She’s able to get to her feet first, and before Captain Marvel can get her bearings Wonder Woman hits her with a flurry of offense that knocksย Captain Marvel out cold.
Captain Marvel may very well be the more powerful of the two, but Wonder Woman’s battlefield expertise and ability to ascertain a foe’s weaknesses are what wins her the fight.
