Dawn of the Planet of the Apes brought in $4.1 million in its Thursday night showing, beating the $1.3 million earned by its predecessor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, by nearly 400 per cent.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is currently tracking for an opening weekend of approximately $60 million, potentially righting the ship at the box office following an abysmal Fourth of July weekend.

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis) is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Matt Reeves and officially opens in theaters today.
