A popular theory concerning Dorothy Gale’s role in Wicked: For Good has just been confirmed thanks to new details regarding Jon M. Chu’s highly-anticipated upcoming sequel. Following on from 2024’s Wicked, For Good is scheduled for release in November, and will continue and conclude Chu’s adaptation from the Wicked stage show that reimagined the relationship between good witch Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, from The Wizard of Oz. Fans of the stage musical will know that Wicked directly crosses over with The Wizard of Oz, with Dorothy herself having a role.

The most recent issue of Empire reveals more about Dorothy’s role in Wicked: For Good. For Good will explore Dorothy’s journey through Oz and eventual spar with Elphaba, but only from afar. “I think that’s such a wonderful thing to do,” Elphaba performer Cynthia Erivo stated regarding Dorothy not directly being a character in Wicked: For Good. “Then everyone gets to keep the Dorothy that they know.” This confirms a theory that Dorothy won’t be a main character in Wicked: For Good, and we’ll only catch glimpses of the Kansas farm-girl who finds herself on a whirlwind trip to Oz.
What Role Dorothy Has in the Second Half of Wicked

Fans of the Wicked stage show are aware that the second half of the musical sees Madame Morrible and the Wizard (Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum in live-action) cause the tornado that brings Dorothy’s farmhouse down on Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister. This will be explored in Wicked: For Good, with Nessarose’s demise and the giving away of her enchanted shoes angering Elphaba, who started her fight for animal rights in Oz in 2024’s Wicked, opposing the Wizard, Morrible, and more. This means that For Good will feature Dorothy’s trip down the Yellow-Brick Road, but not directly.
Ariana Grande – who played Glinda the Good – also revealed more about her relationship with Dorothy to Empire. “I love the little bit of shadiness that Glinda has towards Dorothy,” Grande stated, referring to the fact that Glinda and Elphaba are secretly best friends in Wicked, rather than the sworn enemies that was implied in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. “There’s a lot going on, and she doesn’t really have time to deal with this. She could have told her to take the Emerald City train! But she didn’t. That’s a little shady, Glinda! So I leaned all the way into Glinda sort of having an eye roll for Dorothy whenever she has to deal with her.”
Judy Garland’s portrayal of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz is one of the most iconic and memorable performances in cinema history. It might have been a mistake to completely rewrite and recast the character for Wicked: For Good. Keeping Dorothy at a distance in the sequel will be the perfect way to pay homage to Garland’s performance while introducing whole new audiences to this age-old story. Wicked: For Good is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21, 2025, and could lead to the development of further spinoffs in a new Wicked film universe.
