2027 is shaping up to be quite the year for DC fans, especially after James Gunn’s most recent announcement. Earlier this week, Gunn revealed that not only is Superman getting a sequel titled Man of Tomorrow, but it already has a release date of July 9th, 2027. On the Gotham side of things, we already knew that The Batman Part II is releasing later that year on October 1st, 2027, meaning we’ll actually get a Superman and Batman showcase in the same year. Now, 2027 is still a ways out, but it turns out this Friday is also shaping up to be a great day for Batman fans.

While it might not be on your radar, there’s actually another Batman movie heading to theaters this Friday in the form of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The film is headed to HBO Max on September 19th in the US after debuting in Mexican theaters the day before, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on September 23rd.
What Is Aztec Batman (And Why Should You Care)
If you haven’t heard of Aztec Batman, you’re in for something pretty special and incredibly distinct from other versions of the Dark Knight. Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is a new animated film that envisions the Dark Knight if he were living in 16th-century Mesoamerica. This world’s Batman is a young man named Yohualli Coatl, and he shares some key aspects with the Bruce Wayne we know from the main universe.
Yohualli is the son of the Aztec leader, and he will eventually succeed him in that role. Sadly, Yohualli loses his father at the hands of the invading Spanish conquistadors and their leader Hernรกn Cortรฉs, who kill him after he refuses to give in to their demands. Now, Yohualli sets out not only to avenge his father, but also to drive out the invaders from his land, so if you were looking for an epic story, this more than fits that bill.
To gain the skills and abilities he needs to take on his enemies, Yohualli seeks out help from his mentor, and in the process learns not only how to physically match his opposition but also how to terrorize them by utilizing the power of fear. By embracing the Bat God, a new Batman is born, though fans will recognize the same fearlessness and determination the Dark Knight of our world is famous for.

It won’t just be Batman making an appearance, of course, as we’ll see plenty of familiar allies and enemies in the mix too, though with a new spin. That includes characters like Catwoman (who is known as the Jaguar Woman), Joker (who is a screwed up high priest working with Cortรฉs), and Forest Ivy, who is as mysterious as she is powerful. Two-Face is also showing up, though it’s actually Cortรฉs stepping into that role after events play out in the film that leave him horrifically scarred. You can find the official synopsis for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires below.
โThis bold reimagining of the Batman legend unfolds within the vibrant and fierce culture of 16th-century Mesoamerica. In the time of the Aztec empire, tragedy strikes Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy, when his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. To warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger, Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlรกn. There, he trains in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan with his mentor, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spanish invasion and avenge his fatherโs death.
