Murder Hornets Have the Internet Thinking Someone’s Playing Jumanji

Because there wasn’t enough going in 2020 already, now there are murder hornets. The New York Times reports that the Asian giant hornet has made its way to North America for the first time, having been spotted in Washington state in the fall of 2019. According to the article, the murder hornets “use mandibles shaped like spiked shark fins to wipe out a honeybee hive in a matter of hours.” They can also kill humans and are estimated to be responsible for the deaths of 50 people in Japan each year. Their venomous stingers “make for an excruciating combination that victims have likened to hot metal driving into their skin.” The introduction of these killer hornets has some people thinking of the Jumanji movies and how they use deadly wildlife. The murder hornets are said to have “teardrop eyes like Spider-Man, orange and black stripes that extend down its body like a tiger, and broad, wispy wings like a small dragonfly.” They’re destroying beehives in Washington already. If something isn’t done, then they could be here permanently. Researchers are considering what action to take to keep these hornets from spreading further across the continent. “This is our window to keep it from establishing,” Washington state entomologist Chris Looney tells The New York Times. “If we can’t do it in the next couple of years, it probably can’t be done.”
