Descender

Jesse Wigutow will write Sony's film adaptation of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's hit Image Comics series Descender.

The film is being produced by Josh Bratman of Immersive Pictures. Lemire and Nguyen are executive producing.

Descender is a space opera about a galaxy where a futuristic society was ravaged by the sudden appearance of and attack by enormous robots. Those robotic entities disappeared as quickly as they appeared, but left the society with a strong anti-android streak. Now, any android or other creature with an A.I. is hunted down by bounty hunters. When a boyish companion robot called TIM-21 wakes from slumber to find his mining colony home abandoned, he joins up with a motley crew and goes on the run from those who believe he may be linked to giant robot attack.

This will be Wigutow's second consecutive comics adaptation, as he is currently putting the finishing touches on his adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' Fire. His credits also include a rewrite of Bad Santa 2, a Tron sequel for Disney, Relativity's The Crow remake, and Lionsgate's remake of The Osterman Weekend.

Descender #10 releases from Image Comics Feb. 10. The first collected volume, Descender Vol. 1: Tin Stars, is available now.
