Tom Holland’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026’s upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day will break a troubling and unbelievable trend for the Multiverse Saga. Brand New Day is scheduled to release as part of the MCU’s Phase 6 on July 31, 2026, and is expected to bring together Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, Frank Castle’s Punisher, and Bruce Banner’s Hulk in an epic team-up adventure. The development of a fourth solo Spider-Man movie is very exciting, not just because it’ll bring Holland back to the MCU, but also because it’ll break a wild Multiverse Saga trend.

One of the biggest criticisms Marvel Studios has faced throughout the Multiverse Saga is that some of the most thrilling new heroes haven’t embarked on sequels or new adventures since their debuts. In fact, there hasn’t been a single sequel to a Multiverse Saga project released in the Multiverse Saga itself. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will break this trend as the sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home, which released on December 17, 2021, as part of the MCU’s divisive Phase 4.
Movies such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and several more are yet to get sequels in the MCU. It unfortunately even seems that none of these movies will get sequels released in the Multiverse Saga, which means that Spider-Man: Brand New Day may be the only solo movie sequel on the horizon. Shang-Chi 2, Doctor Strange 3, Black Panther 3, and more are planned for the MCU’s future, but they likely won’t release until after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Of course, a lot of the Multiverse Saga’s movies have been sequels to projects released during the Infinity Saga, but the Multiverse Saga itself hasn’t seen any sequels hit theaters. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the first, and it seems Avengers: Secret Wars will be the last, following on from December 2026’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. It’s shocking that Marvel Studios hasn’t put more focus on developing individual stories in the Multiverse Saga, which has contributed to worries that Doomsday won’t have the chance to do enough character development, as many heroes will have only been seen in one project.
While James Gunn has already confirmed the development of Man of Tomorrow as a pseudo-sequel to 2025’s Superman in the DC Universe, releasing only two years later, Marvel Studios has put its development of sequels on the back-burner. Thankfully, Spider-Man: Brand New Day might usher in a new wave of sequels, even though it’s releasing five years after its predecessor. It’ll be great to see Tom Holland’s wall-crawler back in action as a more mature hero, and hopefully it won’t be too long until he returns again.
