After five seasons TNT’s alien-invasion drama Falling Skies came to a conclusion last night. The climatic scene involved the leader of 2nd Mass militia and former history professor Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) using the Dornia bioweapon at the Lincoln Memoral to infect the Queen of the powerful alien invaders, the Espheni. The aliens are defeated and we flash-foward to Tom giving a “We Are Not Alone” speech. It was meant to leave viewers feeling optimistic about their future, however, original plans would have given off the impression something bad may happen down the road.

“In the original outline, after Tom crushed the vial to release the Dornia critter to kill the Queen, we see the critter scurry away,” Executive Producer David Eick told TV Line. “Later, after Tom’s big speech, the camera soars to the heavens โ€” “We are not alone” โ€” but then it zooms back down, all the way back to the Lincoln Memorial, now deserted, as that little Dornia critter patters off into the night. However, we ultimately decided to end on a hopeful versus ominous noteโ€ฆ”
