The episode begins with Jughead sitting in Pop's Diner. It's now been a week since Jason's body was discovered, and the town has undergone a sort of witch hunt under Sheriff Keller. Jughead also laments about the local drive-in closing, saying that it was one of the few escapes left in Riverdale.
Betty is in her room, writing in her diary about the secret she now has put together about Archie and Grundy. In her mind, since they were both at Sweetwater River that day, Archie is somehow personally involved with Grundy.
Archie and Fred sit in the park, watching Grundy play in a band recital. The pair approach her afterwards, and Archie hands Grundy flowers. Fred invites Grundy to dinner, and Grundy and Archie both get nervous about it, but Grundy accepts.
Jughead, Betty, Kevin, and Veronica sit in Pop's. Jughead complains about the drive-in closing, and Kevin and Veronica debate with him about why the drive in should even be open in the first place. Jughead invites the group to the theater's closing night. Veronica notices that Betty isn't contributing to the conversation and asks if she's okay. Betty assures her that she's fine, as the pair are served their burgers by Hermione.
Cheryl and her minions sit at the other end of Pop's. Cheryl says that she wishes she hadn't put Veronica on the Vixens, given her mom's current reputation. Hermione comes over to get the table's check, and Cheryl tells her not to steal any of the money. Veronica approaches the table to say something, but Hermione defends herself, saying that the Blossom family doesn't understand the difference between having money and having class.
Veronica sits back down at the booth, which notices Archie, Fred, and Grundy entering the diner. Betty gets up and approaches them. She convinces Archie to step outside with her.
Outside the diner, Betty confronts Archie about him being at the river with Grundy. He asks if Jughead told her, and she is surprised that Jughead also knows about it.
Inside the diner, Veronica asks if the conversation outside has to do with her. Jughead says no, but Veronica walks outside anyway.
Betty asks Archie if he and Grundy are together. Veronica overhears and joins in the conversation. Both girls tell Archie that this secret could lead to jail, especially since Archie lied to Keller about him being at the river alone. Alice drives up and makes Betty get into her car, scolding her about continuing to hang out with Archie and Veronica. The pair drive away, and Veronica tells Archie that he's in too deep.
Back in her room, Betty writes in her diary. She pauses and googles Grundy.
Cheryl and her minions sit in a car outside Pop's. Cheryl watches Hermione being scolded by a man, who Cheryl reveals to be a South Side Serpent.
The next day, Archie and Jughead walk through the halls of Riverdale High. Jughead hands out flyers for the Closing Night party, while Archie complains to Jughead about the fact that Betty and Veronica know his secret. Archie asks if Betty is going to write about the affair in the paper, which Jughead finds preposterous. Jughead points out that Betty wouldn't do anything to hurt Archie, even thought she does have a point that Grundy and Archie won't last long-term. Archie makes Jughead promise to warn him if Betty does anything about his and Grundy's affair.
Betty sits with Grundy in the music room, interviewing her for the Blue and Gold. Betty asks Grundy for a list of the previous schools Grundy has worked at, and Grundy nervously answers, saying that those schools only offered her temporary teaching jobs. Betty then asks if Grundy has ever done an independent study - like she's currently doing with Archie - before, and Grundy says yes. She names several students she had worked with - including Jason Blossom. Betty asks if Grundy found Jason attractive, and Grundy says she doesn't think of her students in that way. Betty starts to apologize, but Grundy gets up and leaves anyway.
In the Student Lounge, Veronica asks Kevin to go with her to the Closing Night party. Cheryl comes in, telling Veronica that she feels bad about the great lengths Hermione has to go to to provide for their family. Veronica asks why Cheryl feels threatened, and Cheryl tells her about seeing Hermione with the South Side Serpent. Kevin explains that the South Side Serpents are a biker gang in town that deals drugs and steals from people.
Veronica arrives at home, where Hermione is trying to unwind after work. Veronica confronts Hermione about the photo. Hermione tells her not to worry, and that she was being polite with a friend from high school. Hermione assures her not to worry.
Jughead meets with Mayor McCoy about the closing of the drive-in. Jughead reveals his fond memories of going to the drive-in as a kid with his family. Mayor McCoy appreciates his story, but says that the future of Riverdale is at stake.
At Pop's, Betty reveals her findings about Grundy to Archie and Veronica. According to Betty, Grundy is essential a 'ghost', with no records or social media before a year ago. The only Grundy that Betty was able to find was an older woman who died several years ago. Archie insists that Betty not worry about Grundy.
Archie and Grundy have a movie night together. Archie mentions that he doesn't know a lot about Grundy's personal life. Grundy shares that before becoming a teacher, she dreamed of playing in a major professional orchestra. Archie asks Grundy about the future of their relationship together, and Grundy says she isn't sure, and that they should just live in the present.
Outside, Betty and Veronica break into Grundy's car. Veronica asks if Betty is doing all of this because she still has feelings for Archie, and Betty says she's doing it to protect Archie. They look for something suspicious in Grundy's car and find a lock box. Inside of it is an ID for Jennifer Gibson - Grundy's other identity. In addition, the pair find a gun in the lock box.
Archie finds Betty and Veronica outside his house. They reveal what they found in Grundy's car, but Archie refuses to believe that Grundy is suspicious.
Jughead meets with Fred about the drive-in, which the Andrews Construction company is set to demolish. Jughead asks for an extra week to find out who bought the land. It is revealed that Jughead's dad used to work for Fred, but was fired after he was caught stealing supplies. Jughead gets upset and leaves.
Hermione meets with Mayor McCoy, armed with the bag filled with cash. McCoy promises that Lodge Industries will get the drive-in's land, as long as Hermione keeps it a secret. Hermione says she will, as long as Mayor McCoy upholds her end of the bargain.
Archie stands in Grundy's house, upset. He asks about her real name being Jennifer Gibson, and when she gets tense, he asks her to tell him the truth about her story. Grundy reveals that she had an abusive husband, and created the new identity to escape him. Archie gives her a hug.
Kevin meets with his dad, and asks to borrow the family's truck for the drive-in. Keller agrees, and asks if Kevin is taking a boy to the drive-in. Kevin says no, because he's the only openly gay kid at Riverdale High.
Hal and Alice knock on Fred's door, asking that Archie and Betty stop spending time together. Fred assures that Archie isn't a bad kid, but Alice reveals that she's seen him sneaking out before. Fred asks if Alice is spying on their family, and the couple turns around and leaves.
Archie and Betty walk down the street together, Archie having just revealed Grundy's backstory. Betty acknowledges how awful it is, but still believes that Archie shouldn't let Grundy completely take over his life.
Hermione sits in her apartment. Smithers brings in her dry cleaning. Hermione tells him that Fred is escorting her to the drive-in, because that looks less suspicious than her going alone.
Alice walks into Betty's room, humming and carrying laundry. Alice begins to put laundry away in Betty's cabinet and finds a gun. She grows frantic, snooping through Betty's diary.
Betty returns home and Alice confronts her about the gun, before making her get in her car.
The town gathers at the last drive-in. Jughead runs the projector while Kevin and Veronica sit together. Cheryl pulls up in her car and asks to join them.
Fred and Hermione sit together, talking about the dates they used to go on together in high school. Hermione receives a text on her phone and sighs. Fred asks if anything's wrong, and Hermione says she's fine, but that she's going to leave to go get popcorn.
Alice bangs on Fred's car window, saying she needs to talk to him about the kids.
Kevin, Veronica, and Cheryl watch the movie. They get distracted by South Side kids roughhousing behind them. Kevin shushes them, and they ignore it. Veronica stands up and turns around, threatening the group to be quiet. The other cars at the drive-in applaud and honk their horns in agreement.
Kevin gets up to get a refill of popcorn. Veronica notices Hermione walking behind the entrance to meet with a South Side Serpent.
Kevin orders food at the counter, disappointed that Moose and Midge are making out nearby. Kevin turns around and is approached by one of the South Side kids.
Hermione hands the Serpent a bag full of money. He claims its not enough and wants to confront Hiram about it, but Hermione says that since Hiram is in jail, he'll be dealing with her. He walks away, saying that they'll be in touch.
At Riverdale High, Archie visits Grundy with a gift for her. She opens it, finding an expensive bow for her cello. Archie reveals that he pawned off one of his guitars to buy it for her. The pair agree to end their music lessons together, but promise to still see each other around in the halls. They embrace, when suddenly…
Alice bursts in, with Betty and Fred in tow. Alice confronts Archie, saying that she already knows the details of their affair from Betty's diary.
Back at the drive-in, Kevin makes out with the South Side kid. He shares that his name is Joaquin, and Kevin puts his number into the boy's phone. Joaquin recognizes Kevin's last name, and asks if the fact that he's a Serpent will be a problem, since Kevin is the sheriff's son. Kevin promises not to tell.
Alice confronts Grundy, calling her a child predator. Archie comes to her defense, but Grundy tells him not to. Alice suggests that they take this news to Sheriff Keller, and Archie tells Fred not to, saying that he did everything willingly and Grundy isn't a predator. Betty asks Alice why she's doing this, and Alice says that she wants Betty to see Archie for who he really is. Fred and Betty confront her, saying that her grudge over Archie isn't reason to do this.
Archie tells everyone to stop arguing. He admits to Alice that yes, he's an imperfect person, but that she shouldn't be hurting Grundy. Alice assures Archie that this isn't about hurting anyone, it's about doing what's right. Betty tells Alice that if she publishes any of this in the town paper, Betty will lie and say that she 'snapped' and made up the affair herself.
Grundy suggests that she quit her job, and Alice and Fred suggest that she leave town. Grundy promises to be gone by morning, and Archie watches her walk away.
Kevin and Sheriff Keller arrive at their home. They find that the front door is open, and someone stole evidence from Keller's files on Jason's murder.
Hermione arrives home, where Veronica confronts her about what she saw at the drive-in. Hermione says it was just unfinished business of Hiram's, but Veronica says she's going to need more information than that. Hermione tells her the truth - that Hiram hired the Serpents to help decrease the value of the drive-in, in hopes that Lodge Industries would be able to buy the land. Veronica feels that this scheme was wrong, but Hermione tries to guilt-trip her, saying that their rich life in New York was provided by Hiram's actions.
Archie sits in the passenger seat of Fred's car, sad. Fred reassures Archie that what happened with Grundy wasn't his fault, and the two hug, Archie crying into his dad's shoulder.
Alice approaches Betty in her room, insisting that since Polly kept secrets from the family, Betty shouldn't keep any secrets from her - for the sake of her safety. Betty starts crying, asking Alice to stop using what happened between Polly and Jason as an excuse to make Betty miserable. Alice gets sad and leaves.
Betty opens a new diary, ready to write in it. But instead she goes over to her window, where she finds Archie staring out of his. She texts him an apology, which Archie accepts. Betty backs away from her window and writes in her diary - saying that even though she regrets what she did, she still believes Grundy might've been dangerous.
The next day, Grundy is ogled at by two football players before getting into her car filled with her belongings.
Jughead sits at the projector room of the drive in. He looks at the equipment in the room before grabbing his belongings - including a picture of him as a kid with his sister, Jellybean, in front of the drive-in entrance. As Jughead leaves, a bed and other belongings are revealed. Jughead goes outside and graffitis his name on the side of the projector room. One of the Serpents approaches him, saying that the projector room will be torn down too. Jughead says he hopes that the room will be preserved somehow. The Serpent asks where Jughead is going to live now, and Jughead says he'll figure it out - and reveals that the man is his father. Jughead walks away from the drive-in.
