Star Wars Hits $1 Billion In Video Game Sales In 2015

Between twelve and thirteen million copies of Star Wars Battlefront have been sold since its launch mid-November 2015, Fortune reports. That $660 million has in turn helped push Disney's Star Wars video game revenue to more than $1 billion for the year, an impressive feat with only two full console skus on the market, both released in the latter half of the year.

That game from EA takes place primarily in the Original Trilogy era, with a free DLC area centered around the Battle of Jakku, a battle late in the Galactic Civil War that resulted in the downed vessels crashed on the desert planet as seen at the start of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, including the Star Destroyer that Rey scavenges from.

In addition to full price skus of Battlefront, there were sales for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas-time at discounted prices, but there were also the additions of a PlayStation 4 pack-in bundle featuring a laser-etched visage of Darth Vader on the console, and the season pass of DLC.

Disney Infinity 3.0, meanwhile, came packed-in with a Star Wars: The Clone Wars era game, and also sold game packs and additional character figures that focused on the Original Trilogy and the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The platform, which encourages a toybox-like atmosphere featuring characters from Disney Originals, Pixar, Marvel, and now Star Wars, has hit over $200 million in sales this fall, beating out other toys-to-life games and helping out on the bottom line.

The remaining revenue came primarily from mobile games, while EA also saw a spike in subscriptions of their online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic with a new expansion released this fall.

Disney purchased Lucasfilm for approximately $4 billion in 2012, and between one film and one season of games has generated over $2.25 billion in revenue. No figures for toy sales have been released yet.
