Like comic books, it’s rare for first edition novels to actually appreciate in value on the collector’s market — but like comics, when they do, sometimes they can really surprise you.

Certain copies of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series are worth more than $50,000, according to Mashable (via mental_floss).
The online retailer AbeBooks recently published a guide to valuable Harry Potter.
First printings of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which list “Joanne Rowling” instead of J.K. Rowling as the author, it’s likely worth between $40,000 and $56,000. That particular printing had only 500 copies printed, 300 of which were donated to libraries.
The list also noted that a signature from Rowling, which became increasingly rare as the series continued and she got more and more famous, is rare enough to make a real difference in the book’s value.
