Despite popular belief, a new study shows that Netflix does not actually produce the best original shows.

Determining what television series are good is an entirely subjective and depends upon viewer preferences. However, the researchers at Cut Cable Today used a mathematic formula in order to discover which channels and services offer the best original shows.

The researchers used the ratings from two major critic websites, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, to serve as a scoring system. Each site rates shows using a 1-100 scale, so the researchers took the averages of all active, original shows from the main nine TV channels and services.

Here's the methodology behind the rating system:

"Metacritic breaks its ratings down by seasons. So, if a show had multiple seasons, we averaged ratings for all seasons for an overall score.

Next, we took the average of the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic score for each show. We then averaged all of the shows for that channel or service for the overall score. If a rating wasn't available from one of the sites, we took the rating or average from just the available site. This year, that didn't turn out to be a problem, meaning more people have rated shows on both sites in the past year."

After applying this formula for the nine channels and services, the researchers were surprised by the results. Netflix was not the top dog of the group, the world' largest streaming service was actually middle of the pack.

Even though Netflix has the most active original shows with a total of 22, the higher quantity didn't necessarily translate to higher quality.

Here's the top nine channels and services with the best shows:

1. FX – 85

2. HBO – 81

3. Starz – 79

4. Netflix – 77

5. Hulu – 77

6. AMC – 76

7. Amazon – 71

8. USA – 69

9. Showtime – 68

FX has upped its game with hit shows like American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson as well as Fargo and the recently released Atlanta.

Last year, HBO was in the top spot. This year's study did not include shows that are no longer being made, therefore hit series The Sopranos wasn't able to carry the network to the No. 1 slot.

Interestingly, the Golden Globe nominations seem to mirror the results found in this recent study.
