Morgan walks through the woods and comes across a sign that says, “You Are Alive,” and finds a horse. He calmly approaches it, calling it fine.
The man with Carol’s rosary continues to follow a trail. He’s bleeding out.
A man runs through the woods as whistles surround him.
Carol and Enid debate over whether or not Carl should leave. Carl is in a hurry. He’s eager to find Carol and he cites what happened to the others.
The man in the woods is surrounded by Saviors.
Rick packs the RV and meets Abraham, Sasha, and Eugene at its door. He and Sasha are now a package deal, which according to Eugene, includes him.
Carl arms himself as Enid criticizes Carl’s decision to go with Rick, saying Carl is seeking revenge but really it’s a trip about helping Maggie.
Eugene convinces Rick that he’ll be ready to fight if need be.
In the woods, the man who was running earlier is terrified. A Savior questions his fear. The man tells him it’s his own fault. They offered rules but they people didn’t listen. They wanted to fight instead. He punches him.
Carl and Enid agree that she can come with and Carl sends her to the closet. She goes to get a weapon but Carl locks her in and leaves.
The Saviors beat the man in the woods.
Enid yells to Carl to let her out and questions what happens if he doesn’t come back. Carl tells her, “Just survive somehow.”
Aaron approaches Rick and tells him that he wants to come, too. The only way to stop him is to punch him in the face and tie him up again. The RV is loaded up with guns and people. Father Gabriel approaches and assures Rick that there are plans in place to protect Alexandria. His first priority in an emergency is Judith. He asks Rick if Rick feels comfortable leaving him in charge of Alexandria’s defense, and Rick is. Spencer asks Rick if they should try to make a deal if the Saviors show up. Rick says, “Tell ’em to wait for me. I got a deal for ’em.” Rick gets on the RV and it heads out of Alexandria.
Riding on his horse, Morgan finds Carol huddled in a corner, crying to herself. Morgan tells her he’ll start listening to her real soon. He’s happy to see her. He examines her and finds she is bleeding from her abdomen.
The Saviors drag the man out of the woods and place him in the middle of the street. He tells the man they’re going to make an example out of him. The man claims all of his people are dead.
The RV barrels down en empty street. Aaron sits with Maggie before heading up front and switching with Rick. Rick comforts her. He assures her the doctor at the Hilltop will make things better. He assures her everything has worked out for them because they’ve always done things together.
In an abandoned building, Morgan patches Carol up. They hear a walker in the distance. Morgan tells Carol she’ll need stitches and antibiotics. He tells her that at dawn they’re going to head back but she doesn’t want to go back.
The RV continues its roll down the street as Rick offers Maggie some water. Abraham notices the Saviors in the road as he’s driving. “What the bitch?” he says before stopping, which gets Rick’s attention. “We doing this?” he asks, to which Rick responds negatively before getting out of the RV.
Rick leads everyone out of the RV, gun in hand, but with his hands up. They stand off with one another. The man tells Rick, “He’s someone who’s with a whole lot of someone’s who didn’t listen.” Rick wants to make a deal but the man wants all of their stuff. He assures them all they have to do is listen. Rick tells them that deal won’t work but he tells the Saviors he won’t have to kill any of them to get it before correcting himself, saying, “Any more of you.” One Savior spray paints a mark onto the injured man they grabbed in the woods. Rick rounds up his group and heads back to the RV. The Saviors seems okay with it. Rick stops and asks, “Do you want to make today your last day on Earth?” The Savior denies the offer but tells Rick, “What if it’s the last day on Earth for you? Or someone you love?” He encourages Rick to be extra nice because you never know when you’re going to get killed. “Be kind to each other, like you said – like it was your last day on Earth.” Rick gets in the RV and tells the man to do the same. They see him kick the injured man before Abe backs the RV up.
Whoever has the bag over their head is still being held hostage.
The RV is stopped and in the distance Carl spots a walker. He asks Aaron why he didn’t stay back and guard Alexandria. He claims to owe Maggie and questions Carl’s motives. “I owe them,” he says. Eugene looks for a route on the map with Sasha. She plays devil’s advocate and helps Eugene find an alternate, safer, but longer route. Rick approaches and asks if they have a route. They do – and he tells Abe, “Let’s go.” The RV starts down the road.
Carol and Morgan are still held up in the building. She’s on her feet now. Morgan tells her he wasn’t the only one looking for her. She asks Morgan if he thinks she’s being dramatic and if he truly believes he can just convince her to come back. Morgan tells her she is needed there but she insists he doesn’t get it. She explains it, saying if you care about people, you’ll protect and kill for them. He counters by saying that everything in this life is worth a damn. He tells her that on her own, she’ll die, but she’s ready for it. He isn’t about to let her do that, though. When he won’t leave, Carol draws a gun on him and tells him to go, again, but when he doesn’t budge she lowers it and pleads with him. He offers no response to the request. She insists that if he cars about anyone, there’s a price and he’ll pay it, before walking off. Morgan hears someone or something.
Abraham continues his drive with Sasha as his co-pilot. He asks her if they can do what Glenn and Maggie have, referring to making a baby. He calls it living. Before answering, she questions if he could do that. He says he can, now. They drive around another corner and find more Saviors blocking another road. Rick evaluates them from the RV. He knows they’re outnumbered and rules out Carl’s claim that they’ll end the conflict right here. Abraham slowly starts to back up. As he does, one of the Saviors pops off some gun shots in bursts. The RV turns around and heads out.
Morgan walks around the outside of the building he and Carol and camping out in. He’s searching for the walker making all the noise and finds a dead man hanging. Other walkers approach from a fence. Morgan puts his things down and climbs the tower to put down the hanging walker, who looks freshly turned, probably the man the Saviors referred to earlier while beating the man in the woods when they referred to a man they “strung up.”
Morgan goes back inside and calls for Carol. She’s gone. He heads outside, gets on his horse, and rides after her.
The RV rides down another street. It’s empty, for now. Abraham and Rick sit up front evaluating how they’re going to get to the Hilltop. They’re overly confident that they’ll make it. Abraham sees something in the street and stops. Rick says that they can’t go through it. He heads out of the truck first, followed by the rest of the group, each with their guns drawn. There’s a chained up line of walkers and Eugene says that this kind of thing takes a lot people. The chains are running through the walkers. Aaron and Carl point out that the walkers are wearing Michonne’s clothes and have Daryl’s arrows in their chests. One even has Michonne’s hair stuck to its head. Gunshots ring out as Rick is about to take out a walker. His axe is shot out of his hand but he picks it up and cuts the walkers free and puts them down. Saviors approach from the tree line and continue shooting. The group rushes back to the RV and continues down the now clear road.
The RV continues but its making a bad sound. Rick rules that the Saviors were shooting at their feet and they want them to go this way. Aaron tells Rick that Maggie is burning up. Rick looks at the holes on the wall from when he shot down the Wolves earlier this season. Abe calls for Rick as they come upon the largest group of Saviors so far. Rick tells Abe to go back but they’re paused for a moment.
Morgan continues his hunt for Carol. He finds her rosary in the street and tells his horse to hurry up.
Carol walks through a field by some beaten down buildings, still grimacing from her wound. A walker bangs on the inside of a shipping container and she locks it in but is ambushed by another walker. After a struggle, and ripping part of its face off, Carol manages to put the walker down. She is instantly jumped by the Savior in pursuit. He knocks the gun out her hand and draws his own. He rises up and aims for carol’s head, telling her each breathe is getting harder so he’s going to make each one count. He tells her he is going to watch he die slowly, like his friends did and he will. He shoots her in the arm and calls it a good start.
The hostage is still being held by the Saviors.
Maggie is burning up as Rick tells her they are getting close. Maggie questions the gunshots but Rick dismisses them. He promises she and the baby will be okay. He promises there will be more and she tells him that she believes in him.
Carol grimaces in pain on the ground as the Savior watches over her. He questions why she is smiling. She says there’s nothing wrong with her. She’s going to die so there’s nothing wrong with her anymore. He shoots her in the leg and asks if she thinks she’s suffered enough. “No, probably not,” Carol says. He starts to walk away and Carol tells him that unless she kills him now she’s probably not going to die. She provokes his return but Morgan tells the man to stop and drop his gun. He is aiming a gun at him and offers the man a way out. He pleads with him to drop the gun, and he doesn’t and Morgan lights him up! Morgan tells Carol it’s not her time and Carol is pleading for him to let her die. Two men in combat gear approach and question what happened. Morgan tells him his friend needs help. One man, a redhead, extends his hand and offers help.
Rick and the group find another blocked off road. As they stand there, dumbfounded, the man captured earlier is hung from the bridge behind them. Aaron wants to shoot the chain but Rick tells him not to, saying they’ll need the bullets. They watch the life leave the man’s body. It’s setting in that they might be in big trouble. The logs blocking the road start on fire. A man yells out, from somewhere unseen, questioning if Rick is treating his people good because it may be their last day on earth. They rush back to the RV as the fire gets bigger and the man continues to hang, backing up and away from the situation.
Elsewhere, Abraham, Rick, Eugene, Aaron, and Sasha go over what they’re going to do for Maggie. Eugene’s plan is to head off on his own as everyone else continues on foot.
It’s night, now. Eugene gives Rick the plan for how to make bullets in case he dies. Rick tells Eugene they’re lucky he’s here. Abraham says his brotherly goodbye and Eugene asks why he was never allowed to drive the truck. Abraham admits he didn’t think he could do it but he was wrong, calling Eugene a survivor. They hug before parting ways. Rick and others carry Maggie on a stretcher away from the RV as Eugene prepares to be a decoy.
Later, a zombie with a tree branch protruding from its stomach walks through the woods. It is put down as the group continues, carrying a feverish Maggie. Carl tells his dad that he’s right about what he said to Maggie earlier, saying they can do anything, and he won’t let anyone die like Denise again. Rick is about to address him as whistles ring out from the woods. Rick orders everyone to run and they do. Lights illuminate them in the woods and they are totally surrounded by Saviors and their RV with Eugene. Rick is puzzled and everyone freeze. The whistles ring out chaotically. It’s menacing. They are outnumbered by more than 10 to 1. The Saviors calmly stare at them. Rick is completely puzzled. He sees Eugene on his knees as the Savior from earlier approaches. He congratulates them on making it where they’re going and takes everyone’s weapons. Rick wants to talk but the Saviors aren’t going to talk. He gets in Carl’s face and takes his gun before flicking his hat. He tells them to put Maggie down and get on their knees. Rick is reluctant to get on his knees, but does, which causes everyone to follow suit. He’s shaking.
The Saviors call for Dwight. He brings out an injured Daryl, Michonne, Rosita, and Glenn and add them to the line up. Glenn sees Maggie and is deeply saddened. The apparently lead Savior knocks on the RV door and calls Negan out. He emerges with his baseball in hand, smiling and mocking everyone.
Negan asks which one is the leader and is pointed to Rick. He reflects on Rick killing several of his men and tells him he’ll regret his actions very soon. He’s going to let Rick in on how the new world order works, and the rules are “give me your shit or I will kill you.” He assures Rick that he’s going to swallow the bitter pill that it is regardless. He insists that Rick is going to give him as many resources as he wants no matter the circumstances. Negan and the Saviors own everything of Rick’s now. He turns his speech to the fact that they have to be punished even though he wants them to work for him now and they can’t do that if they’re dead. Now, he’s going to kill someone. He introduces everyone to his bat, he calls Lucille. He’s going to pick someone to kill and shares a look with Abraham before heading over to Carl addressing the fact that Carl has one of his guns.
Negan heads over to Maggie, talking about how “shitty” she looks and Glenn jumps to her aid but is taken down by Dwight. Negan orders Dwight to get him back in line. Negan laughs and Glenn pleads with him not to hurt her. He tells everyone they can’t do that again or he’ll shut it down. The first one is free, it’s an emotional moment and he gets it. Negan looks to Rick and says, “It sucks, don’t it? The moment you realize you don’t know shit.” Now, he points his bat at Carl and asks if he is Rick’s kid. Rick asks him to stop this but Negan comes back with “Do not make me kill the future serial killer! Don’t make it easy on me!” and continues his rant. He can’t decide so he comes up with an idea. He starts with Rick and goes eenie-meenie-minie-moe and selects a victim on “it.”
The camera is in their perspective. Negan threatens to do a whole lot worse should anyone fight it or move. Negan unleashes an unholy swing on the victim’s head as everyone screams.
