At first glance, the characters in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story don’t have much in common. You have a seasoned veteran, an extremist freedom fighter, an essentially orphaned child, a reprogrammed droid, a Force monk and his protector, and an Imperial pilot defector. However, aside from their united decision that the Empire needs to be taken down, they do carry another commonality into battle: devotion… just not necessarily to each other.

While speaking with Alan Tudyk at the Rogue One press junket, he told ComicBook.com that K-2SO, despite being a droid, does have his own genuine relationships in the film.
“Cassian [Andor, played by Diego Luna] and he have fallen into this relationship, they have their own rhythm together. Cassian and he are a team. In the beginning, Kaytoo is not necessarily excited about all these people coming onboard; he’d rather just do [the mission] with Cassian,” Tudyk said.
That means when their new recruit, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) comes into the picture, she doesn’t exactly get a warm welcome from the droid. We saw that particular scene and won’t spoil it save to say it provided an early laugh.
“It’s not spoken outright, but when Jyn comes on, he’s like, ‘Her? Her.’ He’s not into it.”
However, Kaytoo is fiercely loyal to Cassian, who rescued him from the Empire and reprogrammed him.
“If Cassian tells him to do something, he will, he’s devoted to Cassian. He has his differences of opinion with Cassian, but he’s a devoted character.”
In fact, that’s where they all find some common ground, Tudyk said, seemingly coming to the revelation right then and there.
“I guess everybody has their own devotion in this movie, every character does. It’s different, interesting,” he said. “They ultimately are all devoted to fulfilling the mission, but they come together from all these different places, and with their backgrounds and they fall into a place where like, ‘This is what we’re going to do. We’ve been brought together to do something here, let’s do it.’ He’s one of those, and he does take a journey there. When it becomes apparent that these [other] people are going to be helpful in this, and necessary, and that Cassian wants it, then that’s that. Whatever Cassian wants he’s going to do.”
Tudyk did make it clear to Comicbook that when we first meet Kaytoo, he’s “been released from his straints for a long time. He’s comfortable with his level of development,” so we don’t have to see him struggling with that particular scenario, and are able to see his direct interaction more from the get-go.
